Hi SyncroGhia:
What is the fix you speak of for PD 150 cam wear? There are decent low-mileage PD's here in British Columbia for sale form time to time and the cam problem keeps me from looking at them for my Syncro Westy. The TDi is a long-term plan for me to implement after I use my SVX conversion for a while, until gasoline prices get too uncomfortable here.
To DHESQ:
Regarding the Detroit Diesel 3-71 idea, it is too tall, weighs a huge amount, and has a very limited power band. There are not enough gears in a Vanagon to make one run. I had a 3-71 in my old 4WD forklift many years ago and it was reliable, but that's all I could say in its favour. They belong in industrial and marine applications and are simply too heavy and have too little power for the weight, unless they are turbocharged.
I will say one thing - - the sound of a Jimmy at full song is truly amazing. |

If anyone is interested, I am Libbybapa on other forums and eBay, and I do indeed have a brand new 4BTA pump for sale on eBay right now. If going the mTDI route it is an excellent pump to start with. Some understanding and modification is necessary with it, tho. There's tons of info on the mTDI pump on vwdiesel.net. |

I have talked to Transporterworks and actually rode in his Synrco that has the 150 hp PD. It was AWESOME! He said he pulls a show bug all over the place with his, so I think this the way I need to go. I just hate to spend 10g's
on a new engine. I would love to find a low milage used one. Any idea's on that? I would love to come out with the whole conversion costing 10-12g.
I am including Big Brake kit, Decoupler and some one to do it. |

I know the diesel guys will tear me up for this but, do you really want to go diesel?
You have a gas burner now right? A diesel conversion requires a lot more in terms of new tank, filler neck, bell housing, gauges, etc. (if I'm wrong guys let me know)
I really wanted to do m-TDI, but the costs started to skyrocket when I looked at some of the info. It looked like about $15k. and that was DIY _________________ Currently:

I have to travel for work once every other week about 400 miles. My current truck gets 10 mpg so it would not take long to pay for it self. Plus I love Diesels!
If I did a gas I would have to go with the 1.8t I have one in my wifes car and it is a good strong engine. I don't think it would do what I wanted though? |

go to greaseworks.com for a reality check
read about DAIZEE's nightmare
and then look for a van that somebody else already went through all the time money and grief to get converted.. and see if you can afford it. That is the cheapest way to go diesel, short of doing it yourself.
post pictures when its driving
and btw, no, you wont make the 15k back in gas savings until after 25 years. that assumes you do 200 miles a week.. and that gas costs 3.50 and diesel costs 3.80
do get a diesel though, you will LOVE the power to stay in 4th gear going uphill and towing, IF you gear it right.. thats another rant |

I'm baffled as to why these tdi conversions appear to cost so much. How much are folks paying to DIY these things with existing VW 50 degree kits? I'm probably an advanced DIY-type with a welder and lots of previous mod experience, so why would I need to budget more than $4k for a M-tdi conversion? _________________ Casey--

That depends on how hard you beat on it, driven moderately with an eye on the EGT gauge it will be fine. RUn it on the highway at 80 MPH with 2 atvs in tow and constant EGTs of 1400* and it won't be happy for too long.

Engine.............................. ~$2000
mTDI pump ~$700-1000
Trans rebuild with taller gears ~$2000
Adapter, engine mounts, carrier bars clutch flywheel ~$1200

If you really want to blow your budget out of the water buy Syncro Greg's imported Subaru Diesel engine without any wiring or conversion parts for $8500 and get fabricating.
At my shop your budget would be tight for a Subie 2.2 and the extras you want.
Do all the work yourself and you may have a chance.

I don't really want to hijack this tread, but don't want to start another either.
Am I wrong about needing to swap out the tank, filler, bell-housing to do diesel in a Syncro? These have to come from Europe.
What about exhaust? All this has to be custom right?
I have machining skills but no welding. Also I no longer have access to a machine shop so all fab work has to be sourced.
I saw on one post where someone spent $6500 in parts alone excluding engine and turbo bits.
And if I'm going to all that work I'm gonna want a good engine, so...$2500-$3500.
That's how I came up with close to $15k. Is this right? Be honest! _________________ Currently:

They need the diesel bellhousing to bolt up and the tank because the starter is in a different position and the tank is molded for it. |

The guy who bought my AAZ engine & Kennedy adapter did it in his syncro for under a grand. Adapter plate so no tank issues. _________________ Gone but not forgotten - 1991 Carat - AAZ transmogriffied to mTDi.

Thanks Syncrodoka, yes I knew about the starter location/tank business.
But I guess the real question is the bell housing vs adapter.
The TDi's I've seen documented have the bell housing conversion. Is there an adapter kit available? If so why would these guys go through the trouble of converting their tanks,etc.
Also don't you need to convert the filler neck anyway for diesel fueling?

For an around town van it would be ok, but to drive it any notable distance with a diesel buzzing away at 4000 RPM isn't my idea of a "good conversion". _________________
