ok ive been working on this for a couple of days, i had to replace the axle and had problems taking out the old bearing well thats all done now and im installing the new bearings and i forgot how it all goes back together i took a pic of what i have.. if im missing any of it please let me know i havent put it all together but from what i think i can remember it goes 2-3-6-4-1 from the axle tube to the drum, i dont remember pulling any rubber o-rings out when i took it apart but that came in the kit of seals and gaskets for the axle so i dont know where they go..

#2 goes on the axle first, behind the bearing. it should have a tapered inside, and that goes up against the axle. the flat side is what hits the bearing. you'll know if this is on wrong, because the spacer will not butt up to the axle and there will be a space between it and the axle.
then #6 bearing goes on.
then #4 ring goes on the axle, against the bearing.
then #5 o-ring goes on the axle, up against #4. make sure the o-ring is not twisted.
?? there may be a paper gasket between the bearing housing and the backing plate, behind the backing plate.
(backing plate goes on, maybe here)
?? i think there should be a paper gasket installed before the #7 o-ring. don't use silicon on the gasket, use gaske sealant like gaska-sinch or permatex high-tack.
#7 goes around the bearing.
#3 spacer goes inside the bearing housing with seal (#1) with the tapered side, the side showing in the pic, facing the bearing. lightly oil the lip of the seal and the spacer before installing it in the seal. slide all that on as a unit (the bearing housing and spacer) with the drain hole (you did clean that out, right?) facing downwards, making sure the spacer does not pop out of the seal and that the spring in the seal does not pop out.
torque the 4 retaining bolts.
then put the drum on and torque it so squish the #5 o-ring BEFORE adding gear oil.

i took this pic out of a service manual, based on the type of bearing cover you have. hope it helps.

Bill. i am not much of a type 1 guy, but i posted the pic i did based on his bearing cover. here's a pic of a later style as you describe, but there are differences in the bearing cover shape/design and that oil slinger washer you metnioned, from that of what is pictured in midnyter's original picture. maybe he has an earlier rear end in there?
both pics taken fom VW publications. the first dated 1963, the other one dated 1967 (stating for 1966 and newer vehicles).

My 65 doesn't have that "early" oil slinger (#14 in first diagram) and my Bentley manual for 60-65 also doesn't show it for a 65.

Do the bearing cap retaining bolts require a washer of some sort? I torqued to 43 ft./lbs without washers because it didnt have any when I removed the cap. What type of washer should I get if so? Any M10 washer? Lock washer, wavy washer, or flat washer?

Also, using later brakes on oval axles tube, do I need the oil deflector washer if im not using the oil slinger on the drums?

In your photo, your number 1 is the bearing cap which is the early style. See that small lip pointing up in the photo? That's a drip edge that directs any leaking oil into the #14 oil slinger.

Notice how the main seal comes all the way out to the edge of your bearing cap? Later style caps have extra material there which partially blocks the seal from view. That extra material is like a built-in #14 oil slinger, and along with a giant washer, direct the oil in the new style cap out the back side of the backing plate.

You need, or at least should have the #14 whacky looking oil slinger for your early bearing cap design.

I just did this.
I found that the #7 large should not go "around the bearing", but maybe inside the bearing cap (part#1). There is a small groove inside the bearing cap for it.

Small cylinder type spacer
Bearing
Bearing washer in axle seal kit
Small O-ring in axle seal kit

With bearing cap on floor a part number facing down,
Assemble Bearing cap with large flat spacer that looks like a washer
main seal from axle seal kit
Longer big tapered cylinder type spacer
large o-ring

then fit bearing cap unto bearing.

I've had these photos sitting around for a while, now's as good a time as any to post them up. These are all Oval axle tube photos, yours will be nearly identical.

First the bare axle tube bearing recess.

Hmmmmm....
This is what I did on mine....Close up of the groove in the bearing cap that I though was to accept the large o-ring from the axle seal kit

I put the spacer in the bearing cap before assembly to ensure a good seal without messing up the seal
A clean assembly photo of the bearing cap, seal, spacer, o-ring located in the groove, and high tack gasket sealer to try and keep it dry...

Put some high tack sealer on the backing plate too.

Your large O-ring is in the wrong location. In this drawing, it is number 11.

do not install the washer that comes in todays axle seal kits.
they are too soft and deform causing the small o-ring to leak. assemble without it.#7 in illustration.

IF they deform (get thinner) wouldn't that cause the axle nut to become loose (looser)?

Couldn't I just retighten after 1000 miles or something like that?
