PostPosted: Mon Mar 08, 2010 4:57 pm    Post subject: clutch slave cylinder travel, measurement please? Reply with quote

I very recently installed a rebuilt transmission, and it doesn't shift as smooth as I feel it should. So I'd like to make sure my clutch master cylinder is working properly (the slave is brand new). Holding a measuring tape up against the end of the lever the slave cylinder pushes on while my wife pushed the clutch pedal gave me a measurement of 5/8" travel, that is measuring on the very end of the lever.

Does anyone know how the travel of the lever on a van that is functioning properly?

Can you put your tranny into reverse without it grinding? If the clutch is dragging the tranny should be hard to put into first while stopped and will grind if put into reverse.

First is ok, 3rd and 4th are the gears that caught my attention though. Reverse engages alright, but... A new MC isn't too much and it seem spretty easy to swap so, I'll do that first.

Well WT is right, if you can engage 1st and reverse cleanly the hydraulics are OK. Roughness in the top gears is more likely to be in the gearbox, or having to do with the linkage. Changing the gear oil can have beneficial results with synchro operation.

A newly rebuilt box isn't the smoothest thing right away, either, you might want to put some miles on it before you judge.

Does this amount of travel at the clutch lever look OK? Having a few shifting issues after rebuild. Is there any adjustment at the slave rod?

Everything feels good in the clutch, pressure is normal, pedal freeplay is nominal, this is a newish clutch, newish master and slave cylinder. I have newly rebuilt syncro transmission which now grinds going into 2nd, very bad from 3rd to 2nd, unless I let everything slow way down before pushing lever into 2nd. So I just was trying to be sure the clutch was fully disengaging before I act on having the tranny gone through again, of course the rebuilder in NOT local.

Before that, other questions you need to consider and discuss, not here but with your rebuilder:

How many miles on the rebuilt trans so far? They often require some wearing in before you get really smooth shifting, which is aggravated by,

What lube are you using? This can make a huge difference in shifting smoothness.

One thing I have found over the years with Vanagon slave cylinder bleeding is that some of them like it when they are bleed with the shaft removed and no pressure on them from the clutch arm.
This allows the entire fluid chamber to be filled and bleed out.
When the shaft is put in place you will be pushing fluid back to the reservoir, so leave it low.
Two pumps of the pedal and it should be good to go.
Please let me know if this works for anyone.

FYI, this is a must with the RJES and SC bellhousing slave bleeding.

Try Swepco fluid in the trans.
