engines....water/air

Is the 1980 vanagon aircooled engine able to be installed in the 1985 version. I know one is air cooled and the later is water, but does the water cooling system bolt up to the earlier engine, or is it a different engine altogether? I am curious because I am in need of an engine for an 85 and have access to a good running engine out of a 1980. Thanks

The engine is very different, however, you can always run something else with enough work. Heck, I once saw an ex-wasserboxer that had a 1600 upright running it! (although technically it wasn't running because it had seized from overheating....hmmmm, wonder why?)

had a friend that put an 81 aircooled moter in his 83 watercooled. it didn't seem to be too much of a problem for him.
