Ill post some more pics if you want, but it has:

Numbers matching 40hp engine
Chrome Blade bumpers
Lower holes on deck lid for euro plate
Euro front plate with correct mount
No radio/antenna
Speedo is in kph
Gas gauge
Locking steering wheel
2 speed wipers with washer fluid button
Ivory knobs
Euro headlight glass
Euro tail lights
Cloth seats
Carpeted luggage area with fold-down back seat
Swedish only gravel guards
Stock beauty rings

Im probably forgetting a bunch, but can take some more pics if you want to see anything specific.

There are a lot of little differences between this and a US '65. I hope this helps in your quest of finding originalities in your car, which is super sweet by the way. I agree with the "roll it as is" guys.

I know this car to be 100% original with the exception of the wiring harness and back-up light. It still has the 1967 registration button under the hood, 1976 registration sticker in the rear window, original tool kit, original jack, original German roof rack etc. Its a pretty cool car.

And by the way...Its for sale!!

Sorry, I just realized how old the original post is!!! Its ok, always fun to share I guess.

Nice car, but that is not a "Standard", but a "De Luxe". So that doesn't belong in this topic, I think.

Hi all, great thread!

Does anybody have details/pictures of a 68 model standard? I have a 68 which my brother and I saved from the scrap yard a few years ago and i beleive its a standard. Its a chincilla grey 1200, has a steel sliding sunroof and no bonnet trim. I havent seen one like it before and cant find much details.

Thanks
AK

Okay I was just looking in my copy of The Car of the Century book of Beetle changes. It says the 1968 1200 Standard had the US-style 1967 front fenders and hood, and 1200 kept the 67/older rear fenders and the 62-67 type tail lights tail lights, and your car is like that. But then it says it used the 1967 rear apron and engine lid with the old narrow 58-63 license light in back, (which I don't think is correct). Vent wing assemblies were painted "chrome silver" instead of actually having chrome. They had "two covers placed over the slots indended for the new Deluxe fresh air system" and it should not have a padded dash. It should have had lowback seats. It would have been 6 Volt. And that's about all the 1200 entries I find listed in 1968.

By the way, since we've expanded this thread to cover all 65 and later Standards, in TheSamba Archives there are many dealer brochures. Some of them are from outside the US and show Standard and Custom Models, below I've gathered up the ones that show pics for 1965 and up:

1966 Canadian Custom:

1967 Canadian Custom:

Absolutely love the Standards/1200A/Sparkafers!
I've got 3 of the late model steering wheels, but I need a headliner.

Anybody know a source for the headliner?

There are a lot of deluxe headliners available just about anywhere, but I can't find a small 1200 one.

I should mention that my 68 was originally sold in Germany and imported into the UK in 2000. Looks like a 68 standard looking at the brochures, no chrome on the glass rubbers and bonnet etc. What did the original interior and steering wheel look like in these models?

Thanks All

Thanks for the post Andy!!
I guess they started to paint the vent wing frames silver instead of body colour starting in 68.

Somebody sent me this link to their photobucket. LOTS of pics of the 1200's.

http://s132.photobucket.com/albums/q16/threespoke/standardkafer/

68 should have the 2 spoke wheel without the horn d-ring or the slot for the thumb buttons.

Like this;

The 68 like your brother has was called the Sparkäfer (The economy beetle).

It had a short headliner (not around the windows) en furthermore looks like the brochures from later years above.

It hasn't been mentioned yet and I'm adding it to the "official" list for what was original on a 66 standard.

Hubcaps were painted the same metalic grey/green as the bumpers, handles, etc.

Fender beading matches the car color.

Running board mats are black.

Sunroof color matches car color.

I'm making a cal-look from my standard bug putting some BRM wheels on it. It's a factory cal-look without trims. Smile

Binci,
In California everyone thinks I made my standard from a Deluxe into a Cal Looker. They see the ragtop and no trim and automatically think its custom.

Your bug looks Great. 1200A = factory Cal Look Laughing Laughing

People here think the same about my car. Before they said: "Oh what a nice bug, but why did you remove the side trims?" or "Why did you changed your steering wheel to an older one?" Some of them doesn't believe me that it is all original. Standards aren't common here in Europe neither, because most of them were turned to DeLuxes, because people didn't like to drive a cheaper bug. But I think it's rarer in the USA than here.

I've started a build topic on the car that started this whole subject Exclamation

I'm still needing those sun visor plugs for the passenger side Smile

http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=453836

One item I'm not sure about is the handbrake boot for a 66 Standard. I haven't seen any good pictures of one. I wonder if its the same as a deluxe or a standard only unit?????

So I have a 66, my VIN starts with 116 but it does not have a sunroof. So Im a little lost. The only thing I can think is it isnt a matching body and pan. But I havent looked for a vin on the body yet.
I have ordered the birth certificate So we will see what it says. Would suck if it was a un matched car. Ive had it for years and have always been stoked about restoring it since I thought it was a euro. here is a link to some pics if you all could help out.
Thanks
