yes its binding on the shoes. I whacked the drum a few times more and it got closer . Which way Do I turn the star adjuster clock wise or counter ? yes its rear left wheel. Thanks

From where you're at, it shouldn't be too hard to get a spare star adjuster with a spline ... I have one in my toolbox ... helps me to remember which way to turn the adjuster whilst I look at it ...

Clockwise is how I look at it: if you are looking at where the slotted bolt goes into the star Clockwise on the star always extends your brakes

I cleaned that solely with spray brake cleaner, and just a little scraping.. I like putting things back together clean. It makes the job so much easier and is worth the small amount of time to make it so.

Ok Im back still working on this . I was on vacation in Hawaii for a few days. Ok so I got the drum off with a drum puller. . I will take a pic of the brakes and post soon. . The brakes are turned all the way in the issue is the Stub axle. The splines are pretty beat. the drum doesnt just slip onto the shaft . I cleaned and greased the splines but the drum still doesnt go on easily. has to be pressed in with c-clamps A. Im thinking of removing the right side brake drum and seeing if my new drum that I have fits on the right side(undamaged stub axle). and then switching over the right drum to the left side and see if it fits the beat up stub axle. B. replace the beat up stub axle. OR do both a and b .Ive never replaced a stub axle before . and where can I get a replacement stub axle. Pics to post tommorrow. Thanks fellas

I've had to file the stub axles before on the rare occasion a drum was stuck. If you've been pressing that drum on it's likely you've caused more damage than was previously there.
Switching drums from the other side or a spare is a good idea to see where the problem lies but if you've damaged it beyond repair you may be switching axles out.

Good luck.

How do you know the drums are German?
They sound like the Brazilian drums I've helped install lately.

(and by install, I mean trying to fit them, then taking them off and throwing them away.)

Personally, after making sure you have the right drum ('64 was a transition year, several versions of rear ends were used), if it still fits like crap, I'd fix the problem.

Either new short axle, or different drum.

Pounding or clamping it on is not good, and should not be necessary.

Baddogracings Greg U. broke a brazilian drum on shasta snow trip. Barry Lynn had one break out in center of the drum. Frum drum in Greg's case.

I posted a pic of the drum and the part number . ITs a german drum. Where do I find a new or used Stub axle. I might have to go this route if my plan A doesnt work out. Pics to post soon. Thanks

If you go hog wild with the cheater bar you will have some reduction box rebuilds in your future.

Borrow a torque wrench and do it correctly.

Im going to see if my autoparts rents torque wrench out. I tightened up the axel nut to the brake drum and now the brake drum drags with the brakes shoes adjusted all the way in. if i loosen the axel nut its fine. axel nut on too tight ? Yeah I need a torque wrench. I figuare i can go one hole back on the axle nut. i did adjust the stars to lock on the drum and back off the stars 3 times but the drum still drags . or #2 Figuare Ill start all over and tear it down tommorrow. fit the drum on without the brake shoes. tighter axel nut see if the wheel drags or not. and install brakes shoes back. any suggestions or pointers thanks

Step on the pedal a few times to center the shoes and then see if it drags.
