|
|
There is a vanagon with a seized motor in this fellow's yard, it has been there for over a year. He drove it with no oil in the engine and that thing is good and locked up.
I asked him how much he wanted for it and he said he was going to sell it in Africa (he is from Kenya or something so I assume he has connections)
The dude is far from a mechanic so he will have to take the thing to a shop to get the engine replaced.
With the repair and overseas freight, how much can you really make on a vanagon? _________________ GDTRFB |

Depends on condition. Price will probably vary from country to country. US$ 3000 and up selling price in SA. Shipping? Not worth the effort. _________________ '89 2.1 |

Why not simply ask the dude whose backyard it is in?
When I lived in Belgium, one of our acquaintances there bought European specification vehicles from Americans who were leaving. He then shipped them to Tunisia and resold them, I assume, at a profit. _________________ And then there were two...downsized to 83 Doka &

it used to be there was hardly a day went by without some african guy (mostly from zaire) coming up to me at gas station or just stopped somewhere and they would ask if the bus
( split or bay window) was for sale. the first few times i would say no, but i have a few more i might sell.
so they would come round to my yard and spend hours scrutinizing vehicles and then say that they were "pauvre africaine" and could only pay me about 5 or 10% of what it was worth but that i would be benefiting the whole of mankind and god would surely bless me if i'd let them have it. they were always looking for 1600 engines as well, but only if they were 100% complete and in good running order and they'd pay like $50 ............
it got that every time i advertised a bus for sale the first to call were always these guys looking for something for virtually nothing.
only once did i actually sell a bay to one guy, the clutch was slipping and i told him it should be trailered. he arrived alone with a set of plates and drove off then called me saying he was on the autoroute and the bus wouldn't drive any more and that the police had already taken $150 cash from him for being on the highway without the current sticker on the windscreen...........
so i went and towed him to the next exit and offered to give him his money back but no, that wasn't enough for him, he wanted to keep the bus but i should pay him the $150 the cops relieved him of and deliver the bus about 70 miles to where he lived!
anyways, it turned out later that even a completely f@cked type 1 1600 enjin was worth about a thousand dollars in west africa then.
so , to continue, a friend of mine sold a bay to an african, got paid and went on holiday leaving the bus on his drive for the guy to collect.
he came home to find the engine gone and the bus filled with old refrigerators and washing machines and televisions which then cost several hundred dollars just to get rid off..............
i've only had one single case of them asking if my vanagon was for sale tho'. that was last november and i just said, "yeh, 40 grand cash and it's yours." |

I just notice I haven't updated my profile in a while, I now live outside Philly, on the east coast, no longer on the west coast.
Some other legit Africans I was talking to said it was worthless because it was an automatic. _________________ GDTRFB |

I wanted to buy a Syncro in France that I was the only to know it was in a truck's junkyard, hidden in a quarry truck bed....
I turned out the offer,it was a 1.9L with all lockers, dirty, bent, and who knows.....it has been used only offroading for an electric or water company,I can't recall.
The guy wanted 800€,I said 500€,and I had waited 2 years so the equivalent of bill of sale was being possible (was supposed to be wrecked,or for export only,or waiting 3 years)
Later , I came back, still offering 500€,the guy turned out my offer, saying he will sell it to Africa.
I gave up,he was an ass hole,I should have get there on a week end a take apart the drivetrain for my self, hidden in the big truck's bed nobody would have seen me
I gave the information to a friend when I left FRance, the Syncro is still there, sat for years, and now he wants 3000€ ,yeah yeah, stick it deep into your a...,and turn it twice. It can burn at this price,I don't give a sh...t
He was too lazy to sell it to Africans, but I knew it would have gone:I knew a crew out there who was buying the worst crappy broken unfixable concrete pumps, excavators etc.....,fill a container to Africa and make money. He was giving me cash for referrals,I made good money at this time, because I was in the business, and knew where to find the old ones.
They can fix anything there, nothing's lost and that's pretty good:no waste is a good thing.

it is not uncommon for people to buy old vehicles, mostly vans and minibuses, in Europe and ship them to Africa. My uncle had a 80's toyota liteace until a couple of years ago and would get a lot of Africans wanting to buy it and leave notes under the wipers. When it finally would not pass inspection any more he contacted the last guy to leave a note and sold it for 3 or 4 times more than it was worth to anyone else.
Also my mother works at the Norwegian Climate and Pollution Agency and has a colleague who during an inspection at a container yard (looking for illegal exportation of garbage or waste) found a container with cars destined for Africa were the last car being too long had been cut in half and stuffed in vertically! It appears it was actually intended to be welded back together upon arrival... _________________ 1990 syncro 1.6TD "Smily"
