hey guys and gals. been reading around this forum alot and have learned a ton about my type 3. I have a 66 squareback with a 1600 dual port. Im in Arizona and summer is coming up.
fan shroud is in good condition, motor is tuned. what can i do to keep this air cooled cool?
ive read of bigger aftermarket coolers but also the tiny stocks are best?
sealing my engine but am confused on this. Anyone got a picture of a selaed compartment?
Ive read running 3rd gear for ALL around town driving to keep rpms up and fan speed up but in my head higher rpm=higher engine temps
Id appreciate any advice or steps in the right direction like some write ups or something i can read. yes, ive used the search tab/google etc jus having a hell of a time finding this info. thanks in advance. |

if you have EVERY piece of cooling tin on the engine, you should have no problem keeping cool. Post pictures of the engine compartment an d I'm sure the crowd around here will have plenty more suggestions. _________________ John

You might have vapor lock with your mechanical fuel pump? My 67 did that at Rest Stops on a Summer trip to CA for about 20 minutes before it would start. Don't run it without Both clamps on the bellows! _________________ https://imgur.com/user/FisherSquareback/posts

Are you saying your engine is running hot now?
Do you have gauges to monitor the temps?
A stock 1600cc should run cool if in good tune anywhere in the world, just like they were designed to.
higher rpm = more air passing over the engine to keep it cooler _________________ http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/manuals/jim_martin_engine_build.php

Is it stock? You can't, and there is no need to, seal the engine bay of any Type 3. |

Hey guys, thanks for the replies.
It is stock 1600. Not stock to the year I was told.
I don't th ink it is running hotter that it should be now.
The guages were not hooked up. Electrical is a mess and my next project.
Can't load an image. I saw info on how to upload. Ill look for that and add a pic

You can't get away from sucking hot intake air to those carbs unless you rig up a stock air cleaner to get it from the rear cowling.
Also, get a generator cover pronto so you don't suck hot air into the cooling system.
And I presume you have capped off the cooling outlets in the aluminum fan housing? Without that, it will burn up fast. |

wow...
you need to get a cover for that gaping hole on the fan shroud, plus it doesn't look like the ends of the shroud are capped either.... probably should try to find a stock air cleaner also... _________________ póg mo thóin

Thanks guys this is the info I'm after. This is how I got the sb.so fan shroud needs a cover. There's a few hole in the shroud also that I assume need covered(cooling outlets?). Fan shroud considered the generator cover? Ill research what the stock air cleaner should look like but basically I guess I need to pull air from the rear fender cowl. Any this else you guys see that should be sealed?
Thanks for the info guys. |

This 67 engine has 58-59mm? Aircraft Spruce ducting to hook up to an EMPI header & heater boxes.

Also, check for a rubber grommet around the fuel line that passes through the front tin. Without it, vibration will cut your fuel line and flood the hot motor with gas! |
