I just put a trailer hich on and nothing to tow yet, but it's been said before: you can tow quite a bit, but your brakes are the real concern. I've been looking a a motorcycle tent camper as an option. _________________ '90 White Westy ("Knarr")

I finally put the hitch on the van and towed my 17' Boston Whaler to the ramp last night. I backed down the ramp and pulled it back up to make sure I could. The van did really well towing the just under 2000# setup, braking and accelleration was OK, with the subaru 2.2 and all new (last spring) brake components. Wife drove it back to the house, without boat, just trailer, and said she felt OK with it too.

1978 Alcort Sunfish 14' Sailboat
Picked up the hitch from eTrailer, hitch + ball + electrical was $205. Not bad. Brand New. CL has used ones for under $75 tho.
I thought about selling it when I bought the J24, but now I just don't know and my nieces are getting to the age where I can teach them. Made this video with more detail:

Just picked up this '73 Coleman. It's in pretty good shape considering the vintage, PO yanked out the sink and fridge though

I don't have a trailer hitch, yet, but I did tow an electric Renault 5 (full of lead acid batteries) up a hill with a chain through the tow loop. That's not a combination you see in southern Ohio much. I just wish we'd had a third person to snap a photo! |

We found this Doka outside Las Vegas on our way home from Tucson to Seattle. We kept it at 55 with the Subaru 6 cylinder but stopping was dificult even with the big Audi brakes up front.

Just the trailer was 2000LBs. We towed 6 loads to the dump that were over 3000LBs. My syncro is 5000LBs + 3000LBs =8000LBs. Thats pure VW WBX'r moving power _________________ 1961 Westfalia SO23 Mango Green/Seagull grey

That's very encouraging to hear! I'm working on a watercooled swap in a bay Westy right now, and my goal is to tow a 4 seat rail buggy on a trailer to the woods. Of course I'm in Florida so not much elevation change to deal with like you.
How does your setup stop? Are you running trailer brakes? Do you tow in 4th gear? _________________ "In any racing engine, the nearer you are to it disintegrating, the better it's performance will be"

Stops fine, I also pull my suby powered dunebuggy with it too.
The brakes are new, no trailer brakes,I don't tailgate.
If I can hit a steep incline at 65, I can maintain it.
Very rarely, do I have to downshift, my trans ratio is 4.86.
This is the buggy, I'd guess it to be 2800lb with the T-trailer.
Needless to say the van is alot more sporty without the load.
Where do you ride in Fl. I'll be in Bradenton March 8th?
