Tried doing a search with no luck.
My question is,how were the Syncro wheel wells modified from the factory to accept the 16'' Syncro fender flares? Were the cars built and then cut to accommodate the larger wheels? I would like to see a picture of a 16'' Syncro with the factory flare removed to see where they cut it.Did they cut the whole vanagon fender lips off and then mount the flares to cover up the cut?I ask all of this because I want to cut the fenders on the Single Cab and am interested in the 16'' factory flares.
Thanks in advance. |
Once upon a time, I was able to get all six pieces from Rennie at VW in Santa Monica. That's where he is now but worked at Pacific VW at the time. I paid $479.
Prices jumped when the supply was depleted. Much of it went to people who bought them before they were totally gone. Since then, VW Classic Parts had started producing the flares again and can be ordered from VW again. The downside, as already mentioned by others on this thread is price. It's surpassed the previous secondary market benchmark price previously set at $1200. Anyway, many of us are just relieved they are available again.
There was a time when I had sets knocked off in fiberglass in Asia. No, it was not in China. Had some prototypes brought in to California. Then through a combination of changing life situations and financial entanglements in the country I was having the parts manufactured, the project went on the wayside. Prototypes floating around in my storage space somewhere.
I sold my old arches to fellow Vanagon Listmember, Mike Norden. Somewhere along the way, he resold them for a modest profit. I still haver two spare sets awaiting re-installation onto my Doka. Which means you can still view what VW did to the arches if make the trek up north to San Francisco to check them out. In the meantime, you can find a few pics to took for someone else making this inquiry before.

I wonder if anyone has both access to a 3D scanner and a set of 16" flares? That would make this whole thing go much faster. If I could get 3D models of these I could find out the cost of tooling pretty quickly.
Also are the flares totally symmetrical from side to side on the van or are the slight differences between the set for the drivers, and passenger sides? |
My experience with such things is the model is not flexible (at all) like the real flares would be. Plus the durometer of the end product would be much higher. Unless something has changed in the last few months, it might not be practical. Ask Jay Leno, he has such a machine...... |
I should have said 3D CAD (or digital) models/files to clear up any confusion. Technical drawings would work as well, but 3D files would be better.
But anyway you can "print" in a wide range of materials (including, glass, gold, and stainless steel) and in plastics in a range of different durometers. 3D printing of the flares would make you want to cry from the cost though. _________________ 89 Bluestar-2.5 Subaru Powered-RIP

I thought that VW classic parts in Germany had re-introduced the 16" flares.
I can't get on the web site to confirm. _________________ 1991 16" 2.1 DJ Syncro factory hightop ex Finnish Army Ambulance, now sold.

Interestingley enough, I can get onto the website and putting the part numbers into the online shop doesn't bring them up but we know that they're available.

Seems to me they mostly post new products. It used to be there along with the cast steel replicas of the Syncro 16" extended rear swingarms and front outer CV's. Their website isn't particularly user friendly. Not sure if accessing the German version is better.
At any rate, you can get them via your VW dealer or Syncro specialists. If you prefer to try VW Classic parts directly, send them an email.
Cheers,

They did but to buy a complete set costs about $1000-$1200. Without shipping. Kind of pricey. _________________ 89 Bluestar-2.5 Subaru Powered-RIP

Pricey is a relative term. If you want the look, you pay. If you just want the function, trim your steel arches and be done with it. An attractive alternative is enlarging the opening and re-welding the arch to look stock.
Vanmanbajadan in National City, California was the first guy I saw get this mod done. To the untrained eye, it does not look any different than any other Vanagon or Syncro wheel arches. Upon closer inspection, it becomes apparent the openings as large as those on a Syncro 16".

the new ones from VW Classicparts were reproduced with the original tools. The quality is nice.
At the moment they rebuild their online shop, so the article is missing there.

I expect that the front out rigger Russell is referring to is the bottom of the B pillar jacking point.
I run 245/75/16s for road use and 215/85/16s for off-road on Limey. Yes he's very jacked up and I've trimmed the very bottom corner off the front of the front arch to help with clearance. The tyres rarely touch even when off-roading.

What kind of suspension set up do you have up front? I think the reason my 30x9.5x15s are able to rub at full compression (not something that happens often) is because my upward travel isn't limited by spacers or coilover shocks. I would love to run a 31x10.5x15 some day when I have the time and money to do the necessary mods |

I'm running stock syncro front shocks, 2WD heavy duty springs, 20mm syncro services spacers, Beetle shocker pin extentions and Burley top balljoint spacers.
