type 4 motor basics

Been building type 1's and 3's for many years. Never done a type 4 untill this 914 came to me. What are some of the things to know about building them and what are the size configurations - stroke vs bore for 1700,1800, 2000 stock? Do 2000cc cyls fit a 1700 or 1800 with case and head machining? Why does no one list a 1800 gasget kit available but have 2000 and 1700? what's the diff? People are re-using bearings due to lack of availability of new ones? Really? Thanks!

1.7 - 90mm X 66mm
1.8 - 93mm x 66mm
2.0 - 94mm x 71mm

The 1.7 had a 100mm register, 1.8 heads had 104mm register, 2.0L heads has 105mm register, the 2.0L head will work on a 1.8 and 1.8 heads will fit the 2.0L, so no the 2.0L heads are not a good match to the 1.7L cylinders and the 1.7 heads require machining to fit the 1.8 & 2.0.

All used Type 4 heads need the seats replaced, weak area for these heads.

All Type 4 cases have the same size case register (opening) for cylinders, same main bearings journals and cam journals.

Rods for 1.7 & 1.8 are basically the same, length and bores, all 2.0L are the same, they are not interchangeable with the 1.7/1.8 due to a smaller main bearing bore.

Main bearings for Type 4 are available, unfortunately KS of Germany is not making any but Brazillian KS are available, the ones I have are actually made by Metal Leve for KS, T4 bearings are also available from Silverline made in Mexico.

Since the aluminum head spacer is not used anymore a 1.7 gasket kit will work for a 1.8 and 2.0 carbed model. The 1.8 kit and 2.0L kit had phenolic intake spacers for the FI versions of those engines. If building a longblock for a carbed engine I always buy the 1.7 kit cause it costs less.
