Whenever I'm in Germany it is striking how few air-cooled VWs I see (it is due mainly to their strict, rigorous, bi-annual TÜV testing ).
Wikipedia Definition: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Technischer_%C3%9Cberwachungsverein
However, when you do see them they're often in fantastic condition... and/or they are in a museum.
The Technik Museum in Speyer, Germany (www.technik-museum.de), is an amazing place, and I could go on and on about everything you can see and do there, but I'll stick just to the few specialized split-bus photos I had taken. Enjoy.

Where's the engine that pushes the bus? _________________ nothing |

Look closely.
Different vehicle, looks like a Ford, or some crazy hybrid of VW and Ford. _________________ Founder and Chairman Emeritus, ECMSAS

Yeah, but when I look closer, the rear looks VW, the front, Ford.
That gas fill is Ford, but the beltline is VW, the front looks Ford. _________________ Founder and Chairman Emeritus, ECMSAS

look even closer.. those are two different vehicles, unless one of the photos is reversed.
One has a logo on the panel, the does not.. one has a window in the cargo door, the other does not.
Unless I was the only one confused by that, LOL... the odd one does have some VW lines for sure... |

The bottom two are of the same vehicle. Actually, the back looks like a mix between split bus and ford, and so does the front. The side door looks like a slider, but I can't figure out how it would slide. The front windows look like it slides too, but there must be an engine up in the front. Weird to say the least. |

this was also in their gift shop. It had some great detail, but very spendy!

€ 299,00?!?! Yeah that’s about $432.14 (by today’s exchange rate 4/11/11).
For that much I’d spend a few more dollars and get, I don’t know; Safari Windows for my bus.
Glad that you too were able to enjoy the museum; amazing place. I loved all the huge fire engines (not VWs, but impressive just the same). |

Probably not.
b/w photo single cab:
bucket truck, bullet turn signals, treasure chest, emergency light base right on the roof
Museum single cab:
ladder truck, semaphores, step instead of treasure chest door, emergency light mounted differently.
I'm sure there are other differences, that's just what I noticed. |

Different S/C. Both cool though. _________________ It's not how wide your hatch is, it's what you do with it.
