Posted: Sun Apr 17, 2011 6:42 pm Post subject: About to own Syncro Again! 8-) And VIN Question?? |
|
|
So, it has been what, 3 to 4 years since I owned a Syncro. Sold mine and have
been bummed since but been enjoying my other older VWs. Time to have an added
4x4 since we had more snow up here in Grass Valley this year and would be nice
to own a 2nd 4x4. So, here is where a Syncro comes in. I could go out and buy
a modern rig or get a Syncro again which we enjoyed for 4x4 and camping.
Found a nice one and have a deposit on it. Hope to pickup this weekend in AZ
and drive home to CA. It is a 1987 Syncro Camper and all signs it is a stock
Westfalia but appears by VIN to be a Vanagon converted to a camper. Although
would be nice to own a Westfalia made by factory but this one fits my budget and
is not a rust bucket.
So, first off, I am excited, as well as my wife, to be in a Syncro again
(soon!). So, maybe next year we will do Syncro De Mayo again. So, high
again friends from past SDM. Last one I attended was 3 or 4 years ago if memory
serves.
2nd, the VIN question. So, does the 4th digit always have to be a Z as in
"WV2Z" to be a factory or VW authorized Syncro Westfalia Camper or can a Y as in
"WV2Y" be valid? My guess, this is a passenger Syncro converted buy someone
with the guts of a Westfalia. Can mine be a Weekender model that already had
poptop and be converted? The only small difference I see in what I am getting
compared to my old Syncro is the screen windows, the one by the driver side
seems right, but the one in the slider, instead of being right behind the
passenger seat, on my new one, is towards the back of that slider window.
So, just trying to figure out what exact Syncro mine started from. The VIN web
site does not say whether it is a weekender or what. Is the weekender
considered a camper model so also have a Z in the VIN?
Here is my VIN less the #s at the end.
WV2YB0257HGXXXXXX

Thanks and hi again to all.

Letter G is for the syncro, but my 2WD westfalia does have the WV2ZB025 ,it's from 1987. maybe the year letter is after the 2 in the USA?
I don't know much about US VIN numbers, they are different from Europe
I looked at your blog, your description of the syncro as the Hummer of the VW world is good to put in the toilet for 2 reasons:Hummer came later, and syncro have their own reputation.
Also comparing that syncro with a gas sucker military derived truck is a non-sense for a site named vwHippie .
My 2cts.

I checked my vans and for what it's worth, my '82 westy 2wd has the "Z" for the 4th, my brothers '87 syncro weekender pop-top has the "Z" for the 4th and my '86 non-westy syncro passenger van has the "Y" for the 4th. _________________ '86 syncro

I have a feeling it was a passenger converted rather closely and well at some point. I have only seen those with Ys as non Westy. I have seen the Country Campers shown as Ys though. I will have to see about what was used by Country Camper at the time and that is what this one is. No matter, should be nice and usable.
And for the hummer of the VW world, it was all in fun I posted that, nothing serious, as I hope you can understand that from my old web site that was last updated in like 2008 when I owned a red Syncro Westy. Now flash forward to 2011 and I will be getting another since I have missed my last one greatly. And as a side note, I am far from a hippie, as I am quite bald. hehehe. But I like the name and have had this URL for over 8 years or whatever it is now.
