Quote:
January 12, 2011 – The National Park Service has announced Fee-Free days for 2011. The program provides several fee free days throughout the year at more than 100 national parks that usually charge entrance fees. The Fee-Free Days program was started in 2009 by U.S. Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar to help Americans visit public lands in our National Parks during the economic downturn.

The dates are:
January 15-17 - Martin Luther King, Jr. Birthday weekend
April 16-24 - National Park Week
June 21 - First day of summer
September 24 - Public Lands Day
November 11 - Veterans Day

Side note, for the month of April the roads in Teton and Yellowstone park are plowed (only some roads in yellowstone) but cars are not allowed in, but bicycles are, the ride through teton park is downright awesome. We've been a little short on sunny days this spring, but sunny days in the low to mid 50s are not too uncommon. One of the better ways to spend on a bike on asphalt IMO. A ride from the south end of the park to the top of signal mountain and back is about 36 miles RT, http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source=s_d&...h&z=11

Great tip! I road Yellowstone in the summer and it was great! I would love to go back there just to ride.

We had my friend's Westfalia Weekender and we would load up 7-8 people in the van and 2 would take bikes where ever where we would go. Then the bikers would ride in the van back to camp and 2 others would ride.
That's when I really came to appreciate the "weekender" interior with storage seat behind the driver and 3-across rear seat. That very van is mine now!

What great mountains. Many years back our van turned 200K by the Ox Bow -- a perfect photo op.

Fantastic that you can bike the road without any car traffic.

http://www.nps.gov/findapark/feefreeparks.htm

We took advantage of this today and went to Walnut Canyon National Monument to do some hiking, have a picnic, and check out the Anasazi ruins.

We'll hit the GCNP or Wupatki on wednesday.

I always get the yearly national parks pass, and on the free days the parks get more crowded than usual. I visited about 15 different national parks/monuments this past year and I hope to beat that this coming year! (former park ranger here).
