I have not checked the VIN yet but I think my chassis was originally a swing/ball joint (so 67?), but was converted to a IRS at some point. I can tell that the pivots are not factory installed.
While I was finishing up some wiring out back I noticed for the first time that the right axle flange (at the tranny) is resting right on the frame horn. The left is touching, but I can spin the wheel. I can't on the right side.
I have the later style tranny mount. Would an earlier one lift the tranny at all? I certainly don't need much. Maybe 1/4"?
Are the earlier tranny mounts different than the later style?
I also noticed that my body has drooped near the starter and there is no way I am going to get a starter in without some corrective surgery. Thats for another post though.
For this post I need to figure out the tranny. |

If it was S/A and converted to IRS the frame horns should have been clearanced for the cv's. If not they will rub. I don't think the mounts were much different from 61 -72. Remove the tranny and a few wacks with a BFH should get some room. Or better yet, do it like the HVW's article from a couple months ago. |

When I converted mine to IRS I had the same problem, I put in urethane mounts because they're harder and won't squash as much and I got them free. I still took my grinder and cleared another 1/16 to be safe and it's been fine so far even with the weight of the Toyota engine. My rear mount was made by a friend though, it shouldn't make a difference since it was supposed to be a copy of the original with bumper mounts... |

Yes there is a different mount. The later IRS mounts will fit all models of trans, are by far the strongest and well made and they will raise the trans.engine about 1/4" compared to the mounts sold as HD
The best mount out there, Sold as left and right. From cip $8.50 ea
VWC-113-301-264 - REAR TRANSMISSION MOUNT RIGHT BEETLE 73-79 / GHIA 73-74 .
VWC-113-301-263-C - REAR TRANSMISSION MOUNT LEFT BEETLE 73-79 / GHIA 73-74
You remove the rear mount bracket between the frame horns, install these in the ends of the frame horns {under the big bolts} A new style spreader bar is used. If and when the rubber lets go, the mount locks together so the engine cannot move. I use these in all my cars, including my 2.0 efi Beetle and 2.0 efi Manx. Also have a set in mt Corvair powered Bradley.
If a factory spreader is unavailable, one can easily be made from flat stock and bolted to the smaller threaded holes in the mounts.
The mount most people use [below], sold as heavy duty by some companies. They have flaws. They are cheaply made, weak and when the rubber separates from the backing your engine is free to lift and move around.

So I have that later cradle with that style of mount already and I have interference.
So the consensus is tranny comes out, clearance the frame horns and reinstall tranny? |

Removed tranny, clearance both frame horns and welded in some crecent shaped flat stock to replace what I cut out. I probably picked up about 1/2" (maybe a little less) of clearance. I hope thats enough.
I also cut away some glass and made a new form for new glass (starter clearance) last night. No cheap brushes left for the glassing so that will be this weekend.
Definitely not fun working in tight places. |
