Don't bend the shift rod!! They came that way from the factory!! Just give it a clean-up and reinstall with a new bushing and grease. |

I haven't updated this in forever, so I'm long overdue. I've been really busy over the past 4 months with starting a new job and what not. I got a job teaching Auto Shop in a high school, and we'll just say the kids can be a handful at times. A lot of my time has gone into school. Alright enough about that, onto the pictures.
Took the drums off to evaluate the brake situation. I ended up ordering all brand new stuff.
I got some of my students to sandblast all my engine tin (some not pictured) in the blasting cabinet in my Auto Shop room at school. Ahh free labor
Fresh under the luggage tray
It's always nice coming home to this That'll make a bad day good
New parts include: left and right rear quarter sections, all new German hard and soft brake lines, front and rear drum spring kits, rear brake line "T", both rear transaxle mounts. It was kind of a hefty bill, but it's worth it by far the best quality sheet metal I've ever bought. I also all new shoes as well. _________________ '67 Beetle (sold) http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?p=3289202#3289202

I started taking the front end out of the car to clean up some of the surface rust on the frame head and I had a heck of a time getting the bottom drivers side bolt out. I marinated the backside of the hole with PB blaster for like 2 days and heated the living crap out of the frame until I finally broke it free. I honestly thought it was gonna break, thank god it didn't.
There it is!
The burnt charred aftermath.
And bam fell right out. _________________ '67 Beetle (sold) http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?p=3289202#3289202

The previous night I welded in the new rear quarters where the bumper brackets are and coated over it with the silver paint. Then I removed the transaxle to give it a good bath and clean up some in there.
Don't worry with the trans out of the way I freshened this up a lot more. You can tell I started cleaning the frame horns a little better.
Good thing I bought those new tranny mounts!!
Cleaned all the gunk and stuff off of it.
High heat spray painting a transmission leaking gear oil onto my front yard on Earth Day...Ironic?
Chassis coated the axle tubes
Got a coat of Masterseries Chassis black covering everything that is under the car that you can't see. I also put a layer of rubberized undercoating over that as well. Damn New England weather, have to be prepared for the worst.

Why is this one so much straighter then? Is there a difference in the rod between different years of the cars?

Hey Nice thread! ernstben is right that's how it's supposed to be! I just pulled mine out of my 63' and thought the same thing, "Oh well that's all bent to hell." but then I started researching and reviewing my bentley manual it's true it's supposed to be bent like that. _________________ - Chris

Yeah it should be out this summer, maybe late summer but it'll be done either way. JOe I originally wasn't planning going "all out" but one thing leads to another and before you know it the whole damn thing is apart |
It's alright, I'm sure it'll be rewarding when it's finished. _________________ I run two fuel filters in my engine bay. |
