Does anyone have any more pictures of this bumper? It is exactly what I have been wanting to build for some time now but haven't gotten around to it yet. I'd like some more detailed pics as well as a shot directly from the rear.

To whoever made this, great job it looks awesome!

That van belongs to Randal (I think). ne of the GoWesty guys. One of my favorite vans. TDI and 5:83 gears. I drove this van round the obstacle course this year, it's really sweet.

Well, since he did not blur out his license plate, some of the Samba resident hackers or cops should be able to able to post up his name, address, mother's maiden name, SSN and what he ate for breakfast right quick.

Wink

Oh, and that's one sweet looking bumper.

I'm not so sure I like blocking the taillights that much.. these are already hard to see from behind.. add in obstructed tails and a dark/rainy night.

Good news is it doesn't look like it'll be stuck in the Right hand lane doing 45mph up hills/passes. but you never know when bad fortune strikes..

if it's a TDI, shouldn't he have Yellow fuel cans?

If you want that style and have some fab skills but amybe not the time/space/tools to build one from the ground up, look at adapting a Wrangler bumper. Every fab shop makes a bumper in that style for the Wrangler. Craigslist is filled with them. Many shops sell them raw so you can modify them before powder. Add some simple brackets to mount to the van and you're good to go.
The width is perfect.
Also, aux tail lights are pretty easy to add using a trailer harness. I added some since my bikes cover the tail lights. They are very bright and the whole setup was about $70. With a little more thought, they could be well incorporated into a bumper/swingout.

The story I got from Randal (really cool guy by the way) was, that a guy in Arizona who makes truck bumpers bought a vanagon and made it. Then he brought it to GoWesty to see if they were interested. Don't know what happened but it sat around GW and Randal snatched it up.

He even transplanted the Jetta instrument cluster and made a cool plexi-glass trim cover for it.

That is me standing there talking to him with Seth in the background. That pic pretty much shows all you need. Just make a cardboard template and take it to a fab shop or a buddy with metal working tools. Maybe Blake can take some more pics and post them.

Sounds like a pretty cool ride. Thanks for the info guys.

I also like the idea of converting a jeep bumper, I'll look into that.

Let me know what you find out about the Jeep bumper. I would love a slimmed down version (no tire rack etc) of that bumper for my 2WD. I want something a bit more stout than the stock plastic bumpers but don't like the looks of the tubular ones or the boxy/chunkiness of the one GW sells.

I really like that bumper. It's pretty intricate, but tough looking. I have considered buying these bumpers

They are custom made by steelnutz.com. I just got a welding machine so maybe one day I'll make a hybrid of the two. I like the way the steelnutz bumper wraps around the side, but I like the multi-faceted look of the other other one.

I agree a mixture of those two would be ideal. I was excited when I heard that RMW was making a plate steel bumper but I had expected it to be more like these two and less like the GoWesty bumpers with a few added angles and bolts.

I think that the overall sleek and functional style of the first one is what I like, then mix in the skid plate and the wrap around the side of the steelnutz bumper and it would be a perfect design. I would also like a bumper in this style for the front.
