Has anyone installed the budget window switches from our friendly usual suspects, VanCafe, BusDepot etc?
Do they actually fit. I understand that the wires have to be soldered on or connected through a "cube".
If anyone did, photos and explanation would be most welcome.

They are not budget window switch. They are the same switch without the wire tail. Just unsolder the wire from the old switch and re-solder to the new one. _________________ Steve

Soldering may be better, but I just used female disconnects and they work fine on the one I ordered from van-cafe.com _________________ Tom, Juanita, Iggy & Abbey the Dirty Desert Dogs

Hello, thanks for the prompt answers
They are not budget window switch.
Steve, not my terminology, straight from Van Cafe website:
Budget Window Switch

Sync, What size and where did you get the female connectors, please? Looks much smaller than "standard".
Thank you very much you guys are great. _________________ LG aka VisPacemPB, *The* party Pooper

I'm not sure what size. I just took the switch to auto parts store and matched it up. _________________ Tom, Juanita, Iggy & Abbey the Dirty Desert Dogs

That's not correct. They budget ones we sell for $12.95 and Van-Cafe sells for $14.95 (same switch) are aftermarket rather than genuine VW. AFAIK they have only been on the market for a couple of years under this brand, so all I can tell you for sure is that they seem to last at least that long. As for whether they'll last 10-20 years like the originals ... well, ask me again in 10-20 years.
We offer both that and the genuine VW switch. The genuine ones have been obsoleted by VW of America but we located some Passenger Side ones in Germany and have them for $59. That's about 40% off their last U.S. price (which was about $100), but still a lot more than the aftermarket one. Driver side ones remain about $100 for now. _________________ - Ron Salmon

Hello ro
I started this post as no one felt it necessary to answer my Passat window switch post or knew the answer.
To make a long story short, I noticed that the "replacement" (not budget my Lord ) looked curiously similar to the Passat switches.
So I got some Passat switches, ninety nine cents a piece and will try to mount them.
Success or failure I will post photos. _________________ LG aka VisPacemPB, *The* party Pooper

If you do a google search for the part number it looks like it is from a golf/jetta. |

Yes, it is originally for Golf and Jetta (which is why there is strong enough demand for an aftermarket version to be produced). On those vehicles it is a direct fit.
But you don't have to do a Google search to find that out. Our online catalog covers ALL Volkswagen models, not just vans. (So think of us next time you need parts for your "other Volkswagen!") When you view a part on our site, just scroll down and it will show you ALL Volkswagen years/models the part fits.
http://busdepot.com/details.jsp?partnumber=191959855
As you can see, we do not list that exact switch as fitting a Passat (although it's possible that they are similar other than pin configuration). _________________ - Ron Salmon

It is a different brand. It shows up as "Uro Parts" brand when you put in in the cart. Never heard of it, probably someone's private label brand. Can't comment on quality either way.
BTW it also costs 10 to 20 percent more than ours once you add shipping. Assuming you order the switch alone, we charge about $5 to ship it anywhere in the USA. They charge almost twice that just to ship it to their OWN zip code, and it goes up from there. _________________ - Ron Salmon

Uro is an OEM supplier to MB and VAG, but their aftermarket parts are frequently sourced well outside of der Vaterland. Quality can be sketchy...very sketchy _________________ Casey--

Actually I found it. Uro Parts is a private-label brand owned by a distributor in California by the name of APA Industries. Nearest I can tell they don't actually own any factories themselves. They are not an OEM supplier. Perhaps you are thinking of ULO, who is. _________________ - Ron Salmon

D'oh, you got it! My bad. Yes, ULO is the OEM supplier. The other stuff I said about Uro is based upon my experiences, as well as others in the MB community. _________________ Casey--

ULO makes reflectors and the like. NOT electrical stuff.
Now if someone can find me glass ULO reflectors for my 190SL...... _________________ "Use the SEARCH, Luke" But first visit the Vanagon FAQ!

all that is is a MKII golf/jetta or B3 passat window switch.
you'll definitely have more luck finding a used one in a B3 then anything else.
that is unless of course you buy them from BD. _________________ broke.status |

Well after closely examining the various Golf/Passat/Jetta window switches, I thought I would follow the easy way instead and go ... Subaru
Passenger side:
Driver side:
Color match my (whisper) Blue Star
$2.50 each, sure beats anything black requiring soldering. connecting cubes etc at each $18+ or $120+ , plus shipping.
