I have a 1700 type 4 1972 bus. I have reinstalled the factory oil bath
air cleaner onto the engine. I have adjsuted the valves, checked compression
(low but acceptable), i have recently had my carbs adjusted, changed the oil,
replaced the valve cover and oil plug gaskets.
So here is my question:
Why is it when i drive on the highway, about 65 MPH, do i start leaking oil,
from what sees to be my passenger side bank valve cover??
Around town not a problem!
Could my engine be running way too hot, if so what is a cheap device or method
to check my oil temp??
I was wondering if the preheater on the oil bath air cleaner might be adding to theback pressure on the motor??
Please help, i would really like to take this thing camping but i am afraid that i will fry my engine!!
Oh by the way, i would say that after driving (engine has been warmed up) about 2 miles on the highway at about 65 MPH, i can see oil on my exhaust burning, but there is not a significant amout of oil dripping onto the ground. |

Check your pushrod tubes, the o-ring's tend to dry out often. You can replace these easily, without head removal. |

Hey Pinner,
I also have a 72 that leaks a little oil. I had to replace the front seal, and the oil filler tube gasket. Also, after your engine is nice and warm, grab your dipstick. If it's to hot to grab your most likely to hot.

No, clean off w/brakleen and drive 2 miles- the oil is originating from either the pushrod o-rings or the bail wire needs tweaking on your valve cover. By the way even a small amount of oil leaking will make a huge mess. This is one of the reasons I rebuilt my engine, the leaks were making my garage floor look like a tar pit. Barry |

Thanks for the heat advice, JEFFRO, i will check that tonight,
Barry, thank you also for the advice.
When you say tweaking of the bailing wire would that mean increasing
its tension by bending it back??
Also, its not only the leak that bugs me its the burning oil smell from
the oil leaking on my exhaust.
Hey Jeffro/Barry, are you still running your oil bath air cleaner?? |

YES, increase the clamping effect of the bail wire.
No I'm not using the original, I converted to CIS injection this winter and I retained the gti airbox. Barry |

Thanks Guys,
So just as long as i keep an eye on my oil level and
pressure, and make sure that my o-rings and clamps are
cool i should be fine.
Have you guys ever heard of dipstick oil temp gauges??
I really want to monitor my oil temp while i am driving, and
not have to stop every 10 miles to check my dipstick.
Any other ideas, is there any other indication?? |

Pinner:
I use a dipstick oil temp gauge. I got it at Gene Burg. It's real easy to install but, I have heard that it reads a little low. It works for me!
