Asking for a friend.

What does the shift rod need to be shortened to for a Berrien chassis with their fiberglass floor panel?

Do they place the shifter in pre or post '67 position or somewhere different?

I just setup the rod to the chassis. Put the trans in neutral then measure from the coupler grub screw that fastens the coupler to shift rod, to the center of the shifter mounting hole. Make the shift rod to that length and use the adjustable rod shortening kit for fine tuning the shifter.

The pan is of the 66, 67,68 style. However, I would not make one until the pan is in your hands. That is if that’s what he is planning.
One thing I would suggest is to beef up the aria of the shift bracket.

Manxdavid,

Here is how I measured for the correct, shortened length of the aftermarket shift rod for the Berrien Buggy tubular chassis and fiberglass pan:

First, I correctly positioned the pan over the chassis (taping it down so it would not move or slide out of position), then I drilled the mounting holes up from the chassis itself, up through the fiberglass pan. As I drilled each hole, I dropped a mounting bolt down from above and lightly tightened each one to help keep the pan in place. This is important, because the final length of the shift rod is going to be related to where the pan is on final install.

Then, with the transaxle in neutral, I measured from the ball on the shifter to the installed shift rod end adaptor with the jam nut set at half way down the threads (in a manner similar to lostinbaja's post), but I added about 2-3 inches on to this length (you may have to trim off more, just enough to clear the bulk of the shift rod coupler).

Then, I attached the shift rod and positioned it next to the shift rod end adaptor, so that I could mark the exact position for final length. If the pan is secure in it's final installed position, and if the transaxle and shifter are both in neutral positions, you should have a fair amount of fine tuning adjustment either way.

There is no need to beef up the area around the shifter mount, I have been duning and drag racing a Berrien chassis for well over 10 years and there is no flex in the fiberglass around the shifter or "E" brake handle at all.

We did on the one we just built. Maybe there is a quality control issue.
