I finally took out my stock freezer I don't use and will use the space as a storage. I have been thinking of getting engel's portable type. GoWesty sells three different sizes and very $$$ to me. I want to stay with a smaller size but stlill need to be useful for my family of 4. Who is using the freezer and what size? I d love to hear your opinion and advice. And maybe some alternatives of similar?

Thanks

I have the 43 quart version and it has worked great for me.Take it when I need it leave it at home otherwise.I do usually only camp solo or with one other person but seems plenty big to me and it will really freeze stuff if you want it to.
great for fishing catch em clean them into the box and frozen when you get home. Cool

I have the equivalent of the MT-45 unit that I use for me and the kids whenever we go camping and it is good for a few days.
The transit bag is a nice thing to get for the unit to keep it in good shape as well as well as help insulate it from outside temps to keep it from working as hard.
The bigger units take up a lot of floorspace.
Do a search here for whynter or edgestar as well for a lower cost alternative.
An ARB is even cheaper(FREE SHIPPING)- http://www.sierraexpeditions.com/index.php?l=product_detail&p=979

Thanks Scott and doka

@doka: which one do you have?

Seems to me ARB isn't so cheap but whynter freezer is. Didn't gowesty use to sell whynter freezer before? I don't see that anymore in there website.

Does anyone have a photo of MT60 in his van? I wanna see how much space it takes up in the van.

Thanks

Yes they did! I guess not any more? The same fridges' that they used to carry but under
a different name is the Edgestar brand from Compact Appliance. I have the 63 qt in my
Westy and at less than half the price of the Engel it works pretty good.

Thanks Timwhy for the pic

That looks huge in the van. How do you feel about it after using it for a while? Would you have gone with pf430 and feel better about it?
but I like how much it can hold...

Yes it is pretty big but it's the size that I needed for one particular camping trip that I
take anually. The 43qt may be better suited for a couple or one person on a trip? The size
of the 63qt will be perfect for me to hold my food and only food for my week long trip without
going to a store for more ice. Once food has been consumed it will be filled with beer that
had been chilled in a cooler with ice, as long as the ice has melted. The food is for a few
people and not just me. Same goes for the beer! I still use and will continue to use my
Westys' fridge. It's perfect for condiments and other stuff that needs to be refrigerated but
not used constantly i,e. mustard, syrup, butter, ketchup, extra secret beer etc...

Here are a couple more pics to give you a better idea how big it is.

We have a 43 qt Engel and we could live out of it indefinitely, its not huge, but its not small either.

I have a ARB. It is few years old and more like the engle than the newest style. I got it at a show for supa cheap so I jumped on it. The newest style has more bells and whistles than mine does and it more like a waeco now. It gets really good reviews in the 4x4 crowd.

I have the Engle 43qt and combined with the 135 watt panel is one of the best upgrades since the Subie motor went in. It has been plugged in now for four months and performs flawlessly. Plenty of room. Very low noise. Rugged. And you dont have to worry about soggy food. The DC plug sucks but I just went to Lowes and got the stuff to make my own. It does pull a little more energy to than the more expensive brands but you can take the money you save and buy a panel and good storage and you will not have to think about it anymore. Just like at home. And to that I say Hallelujah. Merv

I am leaning towards smaller size freezer like mt43 from Engel.
Reading some reviews of these similar products, they all seem to satisfy with their freezers as far as noise is concerned. I believe they all are quiet enough. Has anyone actually compared if there is noticeable noise difference between Engel mt43,edgestar's and ARB's?

thanks

Haven't done any comparisons as I only own the Edgestar. It is very very quiet, more quiet than
one of those small dorm fridges. I have slept in the Westy while the fridge has been running
and you would hardly know that it is there and turned on. Never had it wake me up from a
sleep either! These fridges are all pretty quite I would guess and they are not running all the
time either, maybe it will start up once every other hour and run for a few minutes to get
back to the set temp.

I think what ever you choose will be a good decision, just make sure you have the battery
capacity to run the fridge and everything else you need too. Mine uses less power than my
laptop does on 12v. Good luck............Tim

Wow thanks

If it's that quiet I would just buy the edgestar since it's the cheapest out of three
