Add me to the Nokian fan club.
I have Hakkapellita CS in 14" on my Westy and they are really good tires. Good in dry, rain, and even light snow. (In deep-ish snow, like the 8" of wet slick stuff we got last winter, my 2WD van w/ open differential doesn't go - the tires can't work magic.)
We like the Nokians so much that I just put WR G2's on the wife's Prius. |

|
|
After the installation of a decoupler, I decided to purchase 16 inch MB wheels and a set of Nokian WRC Van 215 65 R16 from Van-Cafe. I had a set of Michelins on it before and they felt wobbly in cross winds. The photos I've seen online don't do this tire justice. They have deep threads and handle very well on the roads. I have put about 500 miles on them so far.
I did a ton of research before deciding on the tire, size and what wheels I wanted. I actually thought about it for about 6 months I was leaning towards BFG on 15 inch wheels but for approximately the same diameter I would be getting less performance in winter and louder on the highway. If I decide to do any serious off-roading, I'll likely get another set of tires for that purpose. But for now these will do.
If you are looking for a low rolling resistance, quiet and appropriately weighted tire that can handle winter conditions I second the recommendation from the OP.

How different is the WRC from the Hakkapellita CS? I just completed 5K on my first set of CSs on 14"and really like them. The tread looks more aggressive than the WRC. I hear a slight hum from the tires between 30-50 mph, but nothing worth changing my mind about how great they are. |

The Hakkapellita CS are only available in 14 and one size in 16. The width was not wide enough for the MB wheels.
Both are all weather tires, just different designs and as you mentioned it is slightly more aggressive.

Just put some 15" Nokian WRC Van tires from Van-Cafe on a few days ago, and all I can say is, "Wow!" I don't regret dropping the cash on these tires at all. They are very quiet and grippy. They hold up well when cornering, and my van has distinctly less roll in corners now.
I'm looking forward to putting lots more miles on these. I'll report back after I'm able to drive them in more varying conditions. They look really nice on the van, too.
Here's a good video that shows more detail of the sidewall and tread:

Are the Nokian WR C Van tires unidirectional (because of the asymmetric tread pattern), or can they be run in either direction? _________________ Cliff

Thanks!
I just unboxed a set of four and was a bit concerned when I saw all four were the same...

Ditto, fabulous, I picked some up this winter, loved the traction for the trips up to the ski hill, and dig the quiet on the roads this summer. The Nokian WRC van tires are awesome. I am running 205/65/15 on Mercedes wheels, great fit, handling, etc. _________________ 1984 Westy w/Bostig in the trunk |

I'm pretty sure that Van Cafe still has them. _________________ "See The Glass As Already Broken."

I should have been more specific. It is the 205/70/15 size that is not available in the WRC Van from Nokian.
I see that Van Café lists them on their website but last I checked they had none in stock and didn't know how to get more. Nokian themselves emailed me and said that size was not available in North America, but that was a few months ago, maybe things have changed. YMMV. _________________ Dave O

I'm on the last rotation of my Nokian WRC tires in 205/65R15 size. They are the best tires I've ever had, period. I live in Atlanta and they handle the heat just fine. The best ride, quiet throughout their life, good tread life, good handling. I've used mulitple varations of 14'', 16'', and now these 15'' tires on my Vanagons and my experience with Vanagon tires spans 15 years at this point.
Nokian WRC has been replaced by Nokian WR C3. WR C3 tire is directional, but has same load index and 4-season rating. |
