In my van:

In my canvas tool bag:
Multi-meter (cheap, small one from Sears).
Jump wire w/ alligator clips.
Combo wrenches - 6mm - 24mm.
Adjustable wrenches 4" and 10".
Vice grips - 6" curved jaws and 8" nut grabbing jaws.
Trusty Snap-on 6-in-1 screwdriver.
Small screw driver.
3/8" 12 point metric sockets w/ rachet, extensions and flex joint.
Spark plug socket.
Tranny fill bit (15mm?).
Metric hex keys and 3/8" drive metric hex keys.
Folding Torx set - for Thule rack.
Hammer - small ball-peen.
Linesman pliers.
Diagonal cutting pliers.
Needle nose pliers.
Water pump pliers.
Wire stipper/crimper w/ assortment of crimp ends.

Spare parts:
Fuel pump.
Water pump.
Fuel filter.
Belts (old ones left from previous change).
Plugs, cap, rotor (old).
1 set of front wheel bearings and seal.
Spare bulbs.
Handful of relays.
Fuses.
wiper blades (old).
I also have an AFM, ECU and various other parts at home ready to be shipped if I need them.

General auto stuff:
Bentley manual.
Tire plug kit and 12v compressor.
Jumper cables.
12v light and flares.
Qt engine oil.
Gal antifreeze.
Bottle isopropanol for fuel.
Wheel bearing grease.
several pieces of fuel line.
Gloves - leather and several pairs of latex.
Waterless hand cleaner.
Decent lug wrench and sockets.
Funnel.
Rags.
Electrical tape.
Duct tape!
Sleeping bag.

All of this fits under the bench, with ample room for boots, tarps and more.

I'm sure I missed a few things.

Cheers,
Ric

Riceye!
wow, that's a lot of stuff!
what're water pump pliers? Never heard of that. Should I have had that when I put in my new water pump? Is that why it took me part of 3 days? Rolling Eyes
You forgot the self-fusing silicone tape. Good to about 500 degrees, nice to have if a hose should bust, even at the H-pipe.

Water pump pliers = Channellocks. Not useful for waterpump r&r, but good for general grabbing of things, like hot pans on the campfire.

Ditto on the self-fusing tape. It's not on the list, but it is in the van.

Sounds like a lot of stuff, but it all fits under the bench to the passenger side of the heater box, with the exception of the sleeping bag and Bentley. They're under the jump seat.

Cheers!

I am looking for suggestions on a good set of wire crimpers... I am about to start a total re-work of the house electrical system and am willing to throw down on a decent tool.

Dear SF,

These are not crimpers, but wire strippers. An amazing tool.

Irwin Vise-Grip Self-Adjusting Wire Stripper — 8in., Model# 2578300.
About $21 online.
This makes electrical work SO much more enjoyable! You'll get perfectly stripped wires every time.

Here is a list of what I carried on a long trip a few years back. Most of it except for things like jumper cables, spare oil, battery drill, etc actually fits in a fairly small tool box.

The 9 fits some brake bleeders, the 11 some brake fittings, and the 14 the nuts on the valve adjusting screws, while the 12 will be needed for that metric bolt you scrounged off a Toyota in the wrecking yard. Wink

I highly recommend the Klein 1005. I bought it on TK's suggestion and Wow, what a difference a good tool makes. Home Depot had it in stock for about the same price.

Wildthings - you include "1/2 drive sockets 15mm-22mm" in your list (other thread)

To put together a reasonable minimal set of tools to carry in the Vanagon, which of those are needed?

17, 19, and ??
