I just pulled and dissmantled the motor out of a 78 westy I bought. It is messed up. It needs new everything, a complete overhaul.
I do not have much mechanical experience. Should I do a complete overhaul.
I took case, heads, cylinders, to a machine shop they said it would be minimum $600.00
in labor plus probably another $600.00 in parts.
Or should I buy a rebuilt motor. Can anyone recommend a good place. There is a place called MOFOCO about an hour from my house. Does anyone have any experience with them.
I live in Northern IL. |

I've recently purchased a '74 Westy with a very tired motor. Compression is 90, 90, 85, 120, I plan on buying a rebuilt motor , I would rather have a fresh motor built by a pro and a good warranty. And the cost is probably the same as rebuilding the motor piece by piece. I'm not sure about MOFOCO, but a few years back I purchased a new type 1 motor from GEX. It ran good for the time I had it, soon afterwards I sold the car.
I was wondering if I should stay with the stock 1800cc motor, or should I upgrade to the 2000cc? Is it like computer parts? Buy the most motor you can for your money?
And who builds a good STRONG reliable "pancake" vw motor? GEX ? MOFOCO?
Thanks!!

I would go with a 2000cc. The westy's are heavy busses, the more power the better.
This is my first bus. I really don't know where is the best place to go. I took my 2000cc to MOFOCO to get a rebuild. Hopefully it works out well. |
