Hello all. Just to be clear, I have a 1978 2.0L FI bus. I'm speaking about these parts:
http://www2.cip1.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=C27-J13379
I have the OEM parts. They are very rusty, but I've sealed them. The heat never worked on this bus and I'm trying to get it working again. I've been playing around with mounting them and it doesn't seem to be straight forward because the wear of the OEM parts.
Finally the question. Are these tubes really necessary? Could I also run some heat ducting from the heat exchangers to the flapper boxes instead?
Has anyone had any luck with an alternative?
Or am I better off just making the OEM s work. I think I could, I just want to make sure it's worth the effort.
If this has already been covered, please point me in the right direction. I couldn't find a discussion on this topic. |

I hope you're not saying you paid that rediculous price and now they won't fit
It's entirely up to you, you can run a section of flexible metal pipe in thier place but how would you mount the valve securely and in just the right place for the control cable to reach it? Reinventing the wheel usually has side effects.
Don't believe CIP when they say "fits 72 up to Vanagon" either, there's slight differences in various years. Seen this? http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=1119020 might want to ask if they have the other as well. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

Good point. I thought I would ask. Like I said I think I can make the OEM fit. Don't know how I'm going to make them fit snug to the heat exchangers. Those clamps are bunk. |

yep the left one is trashed. I tried to make it fit and if it wasn't for the POR15 I think it would have crumbled in my hands. The left one worked well. |

the clamps aren't the only thing that holds them. There is also the flange that bolts to the tin. The ones like CIP1 has don't fit earlier bays as they are round and the earlier ones like 77-78 are oval. You are pushing a rope to try to get those to fit. Buy a used set, weld the cracks and use them. _________________ “Most people don’t know what they’re doing, and a lot of them are really good at it.” - George Carlin |
