Hi there,

I'm new to this site, but I was hoping someone might have some ideas. I have a '74 Thing. When I drive it, I hear a strange dragging sound that sort of jingle jangles, almost like a chain or piece of medal dragging on the ground. I only hear it when the car is moving. When it's stopped, and I check under the car, I don't see anything that could be dragging on the ground. I'm not sure what to do. It's hard to troubleshoot it when you can't look under the car while it's moving, but I thought maybe someone might have encountered something like it before.

Thanks!
Alan

Welcome to the forum.

Might help if you narrow down the location of the noise. Front? rear?, left? right?

One option is to jack up each side of the vehicle and turn each wheel by hand. See if you can reproduce the noises/conditions.

Have you looked inside your hubcaps? The Dealer overtightened one of my lug bolts one time, Rolling Eyes and when it fell off, it was rattlibg around in there.

x2 on the Gen pulley. Also check your brakes. I once had a peice of brake hardware broken and loose in the drum, clanking around....
Good luck on the search!

I had something like this the other day. The doors are off the car and I had some people in it. After they got out I heard a jingle jangle sound.

I stopped and look around the car. When someone had gotton out of the back seat they had knocked the seat belt out and it was dragging on the ground.

Check the bottom of the doors. I find all sorts of junk laying in there.

Thanks for the suggestions! I'll take a look and let you know what I find.

And it definitely sounds like it's coming form the rear. I always think it's coming form the rear driver's side, but when I have a passenger they hear it coming from the rear passenger's side.

Check transaxle...and CV joints....
Why don't you jack up the rear, put it up on cinderblocks, have somebody give it gas while you take a look from the side....I wouldn't crawl under unless your damn sure it's well supported. Good luck.

I'd bet money on something loose in the drum.
Broken springs are common
but...
The loudest noise generator was a broken E-brake cable letting the spring covered wire in in the drum drag/grind against the back of the drum.

The point being....
Does your E-brake hold both rear wheels??

And so far the winner is... CV joints! Although I haven't gotten into the drum yet to see if anything else is going on too. Thanks everyone!
