I ordered a custom front license plate and got it in the mail today. I was a bit disappointed to discover that the "chrome" frame is really just cheap plastic universal frame that won't work. Does anyone know where I can order a metal license plate frame? Do they makes ones that don't cover up the outer ring on the plate?

All the euro frames I've seen are plastic. Why doesn't the frame work? I put some strong (neodymium) magnets between the plate and holder. They are lined up to matchup with the high point ridges on the front nose. I can remove the plate easily and stow it on the inside of the trunk hood for security if I want.
You can find the magnets at most craft shops or internet. I think I ended up using about 8 half inch round ones. Hot glued them INSIDE the holder BETWEEN the plate and holder. You can put some additional ones on the backside of the apron to increase hold.

The middle of the frame has a bunch of holes that won't let you use the stock holes without the holder. If you use the holder then the bottom part hangs down below the frame. I could have drilled some holes if it was all one solid piece of plastic.
After much searching I found a site that ships them out of Thailand. I'm not sure how much they cost yet. I like the idea of being able to secure it and also see the outer ring on the plate.

Checked the valves, re-timed the dizzy and changed the trans oil.
Very supprised by the difference in feel with new oil. Feels smoother, like there's less vibration coming from the back. The old oil didn't even look that bad, I just didn't know how old it was. What came out was Hypoid (nothing else smells like that), what went in was Amsoil Severe Duty 75-90.

Finally got ride of the Beetle Pea Shooter exhaust!!!
Bought this used, separated, dual quite pack style exhaust in great shape.
First order of business is to make the exhaust heat riser's work properly to heat the manifold for good carb operation. I have gutted a stock muffler around a year ago and cut off the stock heat riser for just this type of use. The factory set up is designed to have the right side come off the exhaust as close to the head as possible in the highest pressure area, circulate through the manifold heat riser tube and then flow out the left side into the lower pressure muffler. Most headers just have two risers on top of each port, which will not circulate, just pulse one way, then pulse back the other way.
I cut the flange off the tube:
Next was to fit it to the header, plumbing it into the muffler area and welding everything back up.
Cleaned and sanded the header so it would take a high temp paint.
I followed the paint instructions of idling the engine for 10 minutes, cool for 20 minutes, run 20 minutes, cool for 10 minutes than drive. tucked up out of the way nicely compared to the Beetle muffler.
Before:
After:
Then had to cruise it with the top down, windshield layed down. Very quite system to the point I cannot hear it run above 10 MPH. But if you are behind the car, it sounds throaty.

unveiled the mystery of the lower A pillar
which is the culprit of a proper rocker adjustment. Tacked B pillar in place
a NOS rear fender looks good, I have all of them bolted to rockers

Looking good Perello! Now slow down, you are putting me to shame.
I finally have my Grabber AT2's mated to the Cookie Cutters. These things look huge sitting next to my current 185/70/14s. Assuming we don't run into any major missing parts snags, the 944 brake swap should begin Thursday afternoon.
My fun over the last two weekends was the Bilstein installation and wheel prep. Both were interesting experiences, and quite worth the effort. |

I installed a new horizontal seal with the motor in. That sucked. Fingers crossed for cooler runnings.

To compliment the new seal installed yesterday.
I made some covers for the heater holes in my non-181 tin. They're 26ga. steel from home depot, rattle canned and riveted on. Sure beats the speed tape that I kept replacing.

Got e-brake ordered from Mike, was going to do more work but it's raining cats n dawgs here, and its only under a carport. Have to find a flasher for warning lights/turn signals, finish rewiring license plate light, numerous other things I could be doing. Other than that I just looked at it! |
