After looking closely at your build, the beam build in particular...
Am I missing something or is the grub screw position on the adjuster about 90 degrees different than the cut and turn grub screw position. how does that work?

I had to look back at some pictures that I took and what you see in these pictures is not the grub screw, but the adjuster bolt. The grub screw is still located in the correct position, although you can't see it because it's very short.
The grub screw always stays tight even when you make adjustments to the beam. The bolt you see sticking out is for clamping down the adjuster within the beam.
In this picture you can see the grub screw...

The transmission is officially broken!! It’s acting like it’s got a posi traction rear end but sounds like a snapping noise is coming from the gear box.
Time for another rebuild; 4th time might be the charm. I won’t be taking it back to Kevin @ KCR Transmissions because of the three times that he rebuilt it, and still didn’t get it right.
Time to pull the engine and transmission once again…..
The Thing just turned 3,700 miles today and this what I get. |

This is not an "ad" as I gain nothing from it other than a friendly recommendation, but I have done a lot of business with Rick Wright of Wrightgearbox over the past few years building bus boxes and Mendiolas for our desert cars. I am going to have him do the work on the Thing trans when it is ready. Rick is a great guy and fairly local to you in Riverside.

On the bright side, it could have broken somewhere deep in the desert leaving me stranded

Here are some pictures of the Thing underside after 3700 miles. It doesn’t take long for it to start looking old once again. This is what happens when you use the Thing for off road, although a lot of fun was had

FYI, I posted this within the performance section.
Well without saying too much here are some pictures of the carnage. All I can say at this point is DON’T take your transmission to someone that doesn’t do the job right the first time!
When I asked to have my transmission rebuilt right it didn’t mean cut corners Kevin @ KCR Transmissions.
I have wasted a lot of time and money due to lack of detail on someone else’s part.
You should have replaced this also!
Did this come from the factory like this?

Sorry for all the BS. I feel for you on the trans job. You and I rebuilt Things about the same time and I always marveled at your craftsmanship.
Keep your head up and you'll be cruising the deserts again. Don't loose focus because of a bad egg.

Sorry to hear of your problems......must be very frustrating.
Contrary to your experience though, Kevin at KCR has done two transmissions for me, the second an 002 for my Thing, and I have been very happy with his products. |

Hi Michael B, where to get those new gears (black and helicals) for speedo ? I am doing rebuilding my safari and found out no helical gears from speedo cable

If it wasn’t for my ’68 SandWinder buggy to drive/play with, I think I would have been done already with the Thing “Face Lift”.

I'm not sure that it's all that easy to reset back to “0” miles. The way I went about doing it was by removing the shaft that holds all the gray gears that turn the different mile markers. After lining all the numbers up in a straight line and placing the gray gears back in the correct position, you then slide the shaft back through the gray gears and back into the locked position. The gray gears MUST be placed just right due to their design (they have small and larger tips, and must be in correct alingment).
It took me about 7 different tries to get it right and then after the shaft was back in place I used compressed air with an air gun and blew air cross the one of the gears to make the speedometer spin. Once everything was spinning and turning like it should I knew that it was put back together correctly. I’m just not sure that my fix-it job on the broken gear will hold out long term, although it will be an easy fix once a new gear is in hand.

Note: I had the black "broken" gear (on the left side of picture) off when useing compressed air for turning the gears.

I went to a VW parts yard and found a broken but usable speedo that I could use the parts from. Once I found that good gear I was all set.
Don't know of any part stores that would supply this small gear.

| That is some amazing work, I just finished your whole thread from 1 to 16. I traded my 67 vert bug for a 74 thing. Is going to be my wife's toy and this was some great motivation for us. Thanks very much. |

| WOW! I bought two things last year, one's a driver but needs alot of work and the other is "close" to a basket case....close! I don't want to go thru the whole works but want to "fix" her up enuf to have some more fun this new england season. Floor pans and master cylinder are a must... Great job on yours! Love this thread!
