might be time to re index the spring plates. old vw's tend to start sagging in the rear.

Adjust the rear torsion bar on one side - up or down to height you like is obtained.

I have to look on you tube howto adjust the torsion. I want the drivers side to match the passenger.thanks.

All you need to know about adjusting torsion bars. Also, I suggest this for reinstalling them:

It's a trick VW genius Joel posted. Just a 1/4 inch thick angle iron bolted to the plate. Makes the job easy and safe.
Looking at the space between the fender and tires, looks like the plates are indexed differently.
Or maybe even one tire is a different size?

Sometimes the torsion bars gets a sag from time and use. Adjusting it may not get you exactly level with the other side. Only way to kno wis to try it. Do a search about torsion bars because a combination of inner and outer spline changes can create teh right combo you need for teh right height.

one side sagging much more than the other is reason for concern. yes they tend to sag a bit after a few decades, but it does so symmetrically. sure you can index the right side differently from the left to correct the ride height, but i would rather know the reason why it's like this. i'd start taking chassis measurements and looking closely for incompetently performed structural repairs..... i've seen a lot of ghetto-fabulous bodywork on these cars.... previous owners who wrecked them, were uninsured, and didn't want to pay for a proper repair....

It appears that someone simply attempted to lower it and didnt count the splines, realized that it was a lot of work and said to hell with it.

I sort of have a similar problem so im gonna try to revive this instead of starting a new thread..

So a little back story, in December I lowered my rear and all was good except for a clunking noise from the passenger side. then about a month ago i saw driving in my front yard at less than 5 mph (long story) and went over a small dip at an angle and heard a strange sound i never heard before. i went for a drive and it drove like it has since december which was pretty normal. when i got home i noticed the passenger side sagging about .75 - 1 inch more then before. so i bought new shocks, helped a little but by the next day it was back where it was.

then i bought new spring plate bushing (inner and outer for both sides) and replaced them about 1.5 weeks ago. and my sagging passenger side was fixed!! i was so happy. then about ab hour ago i was pulling into my driveway but had to go through the grass and over the same dip/small mound, to get to my parking spot in front of my dads truck and the passenger side made the same horrible sound it did when it started sagging, so when i got out i checked and sure enough, its sagging again!!

SO, i was wondering if this would a symptom of possibly a stress fracture in my torsion bar on that side?? thats the only thing i can think it would be. any other ideas?
