So I found this oval window here on the Samba for sale. After alot of thought I decided it needed me as much as I needed it. Problem being that I live in Virginia Beach, Virginia and this oval is in Billings, Montana. I am the type of guy that is always up for the challenge so what the hell...why not? She looks pretty solid although it is not complete. I am sure you all saw this car in the ads. Anyway my passion sometimes overrides my sensibility so throwing everything to the wind made the deal, besides us VW people will go to great lengths to make something happen...right? I have over the course of my VW love affair bought and sold many cars, these cars I actually flat towed to the various places I have called home. For example, I flat towed a 1967 from New Hampshire to Virginia, no problems. Flat towed a 1954 from Tennessee to Florida, no problems. Flat towed a 1956 from Connecticut to Florida no problems. I did however bring my tools, spare tires and a set of wheel bearings each time. I actually thought about flat towing this car home to Virginia, 2100 miles, but for once my brain took the helm and I have decided it might not be such a good idea. I own a my own semi truck so have decided to make a little vacation out of this adventure. So I have contacted the company I am contracted to to get me a load to Billings, Montana. Once I have unloaded the freight I will load the car up on the back of my trailer and the car will ride 2100 miles to its new home. This will happen next weekend July 22. Please feel free to follow along on this trip as I will post pictures as we go. Looking forward to this adventure...wish me luck.

I have since aquired a correct engine manufactured within 2 months of the car. The engine was found in the woods near Winchester, Virginia. I am including pictures. I plan on tearing it down to the bare case and taking it along with me the next time I travel to southern Cal to make a visit to Rimco. Have the case machined as well as the one head to try to aquire a match. Case savers are a must. Gotta alot to do here.

For fun I decided to purchase a vintage Montana plate off ebay. I will be running YOM plates on this car. I have two nice sets of 1954 Virginia plates that I will send off for restorarion.

My objective.....
First on the list, getting her home to Virginia. That will cost me ruffly a total of 1500.00 in fuel alone for my rig.
Second is to recover from the trip and start collecting the parts needed to make the car whole again. Good luck right. In the meantime I am going to restore the engine to give the car a heartbeat.
The third is pan off restoration. No mods, just a resto to showroom. Car was black with a red interior and that is what she will be again.
I have decided though to put her back together for a bit to enjoy her even if only for a summer next year. Then it will be time to tear her down for the rebuild.

Here are two pictures from past adventures. The first is the 1967 being towed to Virginia. Second is the 1954 being flat towed to Florida. And yes, that 2008 Rabbit was the tow vehicle.

HOLY CRAP.
I think I owned that car, green with a white painted gas tank, in 1975-1976, in Gardiner, Montana, when I worked for the Nat'l Park Service in Yellowstone Nat'l Park.... If you find any type of history on that car, and if it was owned at one time by John Galle, or Galle's Texaco Service (thats who I bought it from) then that's my old car. I sold it in 1976 to a guy in Big Timber, just outside of Billings, when I took a job at Redwood Nat'l Park in Northern CA.
(The... ahem...."seeds and stems" under the rear seat weren't there when I owned it....  )

Hey Dave. I do not think it is the same car as this car has not been titled since 06/02/69 and was titled to a Mr. John A. Haydu. But thanks for your interest. I can't imagine why the tank is painted white, one can only guess. Thanks for your reply though.

Well what a start to this adventure. I unloaded this morning in Denver, Colorado. Left Denver bound for Salt Lake City, UT to pick up a spare 36 horsepower engine. We got almost to Cheyenne, Wyoming when a tire blew out on the trailer. We have been sitting here at the TA truck stop for 4 hours now waiting for repair. I hope we can get out of here because I have to meet the gentleman with the engine tomorrow evening. Keep your fingers crossed. I did see this rainbow while we were waiting so I am hoping this is a good sign.

Day 2 of the trip went according to plan thank gosh. Made the voyage from Cheyenne, Wyoming to Salt Lake City, Utah without any issues. Was a beautiful ride across Wyoming. Met the gentleman that sold me the engine in a Wal-Mart parking lot to finish the transaction. Not easy to just park this big rig just anywhere. He was a very nice guy, as ofcourse all Volkswagen people are.
Waiting to move the engine in place.
Got it done.
Now to close up the trailer and on to the next stop tomorrow. Billings, Montana.
