While sitting at a stoplight in traffic: "Hey! Is that a TOYOTA?"
While pumping gas, a pretty young lady remarked: "That car is TIGHT!"
While driving through a Target parking lot: "Well, lookie there!"

Just came back from getting lunch.

Guy pulls up beside me at a stop light, "What is that?" I answer it is a Thing. He says "What kind of Thing?". I say it is a VW Thing. He says "What kind of VW Thing?"

Lady: "Is that a Thing?"

Me: "Yes, it is."

Lady: "Volkswagen or Jeep?"

Going through a Taco Bell drive thru, the "want fries with that" attendant asked "do they still make those?".

Me, "yeah, just have to special order it from the Hummer dealer".

I was stopped in a parking lot the other day. The guy asks,
"You can pull the doors off that car also, right?"
"yep"
He elbows his friend, "We need to get us one of them, open the top, pull off the doors, and take her into the woods. Four guys would be able to hunt from that thing"

When I was deployed to Somalia, we had kind of an ad hoc motorized unit, and we were referred to as the "gun slinging f**ks in trucks", as we basically drove around as that fellow suggested.

I was driving down our main street last night. It's about 7, and because we are a tourist town in the summer, the sidewalks are packed. Suddenly, this 50ish guy steps out past the parked cars and into the street.

Gives me the Heil Hitler salute as I drive back. I just yelled "NATO doesn't do that" and kept going.

Are the german army references as common for everyone, or am I just lucky?

I haven't owned a Thing for several years, but I've had four of them. I've heard most of the comments related here, including the floating... VW actually used that tidbit in an advert from about '67, years ago I found this ad in an old LIFE magazine in my grandparent's house;

It was VW started that one!

My last Thing had a bumper sticker from the Thing Shop:
"DONT STARE AT MY THING!"

When I lived in Daytona, it was no big deal... they used to have a rental fleet of orange Things for beach cruising. When I moved up to New York City, it was like I had landed in a UFO. Laughing

Too many comments to list. Two today: "That's tight", and "NICE!"

And then this...
A woman stopped me in a parking lot today with an unusual Thing story. Some time ago, her family and some friends went camping at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. One of the friends drove a VW Thing. He had a bit too much to drink at the campfire, then hit the dunes by himself in the Thing. The next morning the campers noticed mysterious tire tracks on all the doors. Seems the driver had gotten stuck in the sand, tried like crazy to get unstuck, then as a last resort, took the doors off the car and placed them under the tires for traction. Not so good for the doors, but it worked!

Today:

"Wanna sell it?"

Thumbs up from a driver in a Yellow Spyder.

And why do almost all Miata owners wave at me?
