So I read this thread, clicked a few links, and found out the reveal event was 10 minutes from my house in Potsdamer Platz (downtown Berlin).
I drove down there, snatched up a brochure, and took photos for "ya'll" to look at.
I was never a fan of the "new beetle" when it was launched, but I have to say that this model is much improved.
Much better fit and finish it would appear, way better body shape and roofline. Good stance, active rear spoiler and DSG or 6 speed manual.
Overall nice looking car from a visual design perspective.
I might actually consider one for the wife now.
Photos posted up <HERE> in just a minute, and maybe a short video clip or two as well.
BTW, I'm working on the VW dudes to let me have that VW logo in the lower right section of the "billboard". Odds are 50/50, but it's worth the shot:

Turn your volume off for this one unless you want to hear 50 cussing and sh!t in your ear at an "unreasonable volume":

I think the optional käfer badges are pretty cool.
Interior / exterior color options. Sorry I couldn't scan them instead. I packed up my scanner..
.....The silver paint with the black glass panoramic sunroof looks pretty good.

I just can't feature the engine up front on the 2012.... I'd have to drive around backwards in it.
When i'm in a VW the engine needs to be going where i've already been.
I am glad the beetle refuses to die |
The Beetles original replacement was the Golf/ Rabbit. They should have kept it that way. |
Isn't that exactly what they did? The newb is on a golf chassis isn't it? _________________ http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=366056 - My '73 Super Build. 2332cc, 16" Fuchs |

The new one is based on the VW Scirocco / Eos. Everybody I know who had the chance to drive it came back with a big smile. For sure, it is not the next generation of the real old (aircooled) beetle - but it is a very nice car to have fun. |

Anyone else think its a little ironic how this discussion turned into being just about the 2012 beetle and its in the split window forum? _________________ PNW Dub Folk & Kitsap dub Folk (KdF)

I reckon that this is the best looking new Beetle. I was never a fan before but I think that this could challenge the Scirocco (Is VW shooting itself in the wimdu?)

A thousand Euro per wheel? Really? That's like $5,600 a set.
Crack-smoking.
I'd take the 6k and put in into the price difference to the Golf R and rock it on factory trim first. |

"DSG" commonly goes hand-in hand with most new vehicles equipped with paddle shifters on the steering wheel, but not true 100% of the time.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dual_clutch_transmission
Somebody might have a more correct and long winded response, but in short, there is a clutch for the even gears and one for the odd. This allows the gear one up or one down to already be "waiting" for your up-shift or down-shift. gear changes become a matter of a a fraction of a second and power to the drive-train interruption is almost non-existent....in a nutshell. |

there's just something about this area that turns me off.
I think the fenders need more width from the body with a wider overall wheelbase track, and less height as they move from back to front where the headlights are.
...I also agree that the VW logo needs to come off the front and go up on top of the hood as well.
This looks terrible no matter what angle you come from.
Stamped into the sheet metal would be even better up top.
...and what would be so wrong with having the bumper and the fenders not as one huge piece wrapping 180 degrees around the front end...again back to the front fenders. Saved cost at the expense of a better visual design. No surprise there I guess, but unfortunate.
.great looking car above the door handle line though. Unfortunately you get the lower part as well if you buy one.

hands down, the new FIAT 500 Abarth has this one beat on the looks department in real life. IMO
As evidenced by the below photo of said automobile:
