Brent, which awning is that? That's a great looking, and very clean, design. _________________ 1984 Westy with tencentlife power! |

That's the Large Kelty carport. I'm pretty happy with it. It has held up well in a 30 mph wind when properly guyed down at the poles. It has kept a light rain off me and it does a fine job as a shade. Attaching to the van is a little problematic as it is designed to attach to a roof rack. I attach the front velcro strap to one of the luggage compartment tie-downs. I attach the other end to the bottom edge of the popped top with a couple of woodworking spring clamps. (Sort of like large metal clothespins.)
The downside is that it takes about 20 minutes to set it up the first time. Now that I have set it up several times I'm down to about 10 minutes. It's easy to remove it fully-assembled from the van and stake it to the ground when you leave camp for a few hours and don't want to pack it up.

Refugio State Beach from April 2011 - we had planned to camp at the Santa Barbara hot springs but the road was closed and washed out. Turned out well and my Kirkham's auto canopy kept us dry!
You can't see it, but there's a tasty steak on the notebook grill in front of me!
Then this one is out east of Palm Springs, CA at the SoCal Desert Rendezvous:
and you might recognize some of these vans from the same event!
I didnt' realize it, but it seems to be the "thing" to do with 3 vans to make a U shape to block the wind. Not a bad idea! _________________ 1986 Westy - Billie Jean

I did a little research on this and it's currently available at Amazon for $131.99 (60% off!) and while it didn't say "Free Shipping" when I ordered it (yes, I did...) no shipping was added so the $131.99 was the final price. A couple other sites I looked at said it was discontinued and unavailable so this must be a clearance price. I sure I can cobble some sort of attachment system available, though I'm a big fan of giant woodworking clamps.
Thanks! _________________ 1984 Westy with tencentlife power! |

Here is my ultra simple overnight in the Targhee NF, outside of alta Wyoming. Right next to a fast runing creek.
Just getting started with the Vanagon thing, so not yet fully equipped. Many years camping in all formats, so not my first rodeo. Heck, my full time living arrangements are in a 35' motorhome, and the westy equipped to tow behind.
Getting ready to head out today, from Yellowstone up towards Bozeman I think, then maybe down to Ilsland Park, ID for the rest of weekend.

RE Me and the Kids...
For me, that was many years ago, but I remember those days well, nothing like bringing the kids up around an outdoor activity. For us it was camping and sailing. (sailing/cruising = camping on the water)
They grew up great, daughter and family looking for a camping rig, she loves the Westy, and son goes out backpacking, mountain biking etc. It works! Start the lifestyle. |

Campsite or wilderness, maybe both. Next time up I will get here before sundown and set up a site, will have a chainsaw so I can get in there a little deeper.
Nice overnighter. Near Island Park, ID. Tons of off the track sites here, but this night was on the unimproved land my nephew owns. Had to lock it into the GPS. COming back in a month with the chainsaws and rakes and implements of destruction to clean the lot up. |

We just picked up this Westy from a french family traveling across the US and Mexico , this is at Xpu-Ha seaside campsite near Playa del Carmen , Mexico.
I'm the one not french wearing a San Diego Chargers shirt
This was only steps away.
On the road.
Now seaside camping in Chetumal.
Same trip but now at Maya Bell campground near the Mayan ruins in Palenque , Chiapas.
Those were the only campsites we visited on this trip. |

The van "Moose" at Missinaibi provincial Park July 2011 - great fishing, over 200 walleye caught over 3 days.
With the top insulated the van was cool in the day time and warm at night. _________________ NAHT hightop availability May 18 2023 -
