If I had a chevy v8 in my bus I would just cover carb and dizzy and pressure wash the motor. My concern here is dirt/grinding dust getting in behind the crank pulley. My motors really dirty on top and bottom. Is it still safe to pressure wash it or is that a no no?

I have power washed mine, but I keep it running... Also I never directly shoot at certain areas, like behind the pulley, at the carb/dist, etc.. That purple crap from local stores works good.. I like a 4 to 1 mix water to purple... Stuff is kinda amazing... A little kerosene will cut thru the real nasty stuff...

You could stuff a rag behind the pulley just to keep stuff from running behind there.

heavy duty oven cleaner works wonders along with purple power previously mentioned

if you use oven cleaner you have to be careful it will etch aluminum and take off paint

Mineral spirits in an air pressurized canister...a little on the expensive side but works great and doesn't leave residue that purple stuff does nor does it etch...all my tins are powder coated so that might not work for your situation...not sure if you have show paint or anything other than stock.

Yes I do have show paint. 1. you step on over to my bus. 2. you ask me to show you where the paint is. 3. I point out........theres some over there, just past the rust.
Im just wanting to clean up all the shit off of it. Years of build up/metal grinding dust from overhead engine hatch installation.

I avoid hitting the paper tubes distributor or carb.
I like to spray simple green on the greasy areas. I find the purple stuff can leave streaks in the paint.
You may choose to wash under the motor first.
I do aim at the area between crank pulley and case.
It is fine to leave it running. If it stalls out, you probably will need to remove the cap and wipe it with a dry clean rag before restarting it. When leaving, check brakes for function they may be wet.

I think Im going to unplug the plug wires and ziplock the dizzy and carbs. Im also guessing by reason of crackage that its not a good idea to spray the heads and cylinders from the bottom.......especially while running. I dont have any simple green. just gonna use the old spray degreaser I guess.

thats why I leave it running... like adding water to a hot car - needs to be running or it will crack... no different then hitting a big puddle will driving...

I've done all my air cooled this way, never cracked one yet...

Used the simple green and a garden hose. Didnt quite get it so I went to the car wash/still used simple green. Worked much better. Will have to go back for a spotless clean.
