The title says it all.

I am moving to Santa Cruz California (hills).
I have a 1957 Canadian Deluxe Type 1.

Will be working on my first engine rebuild (1776). I'll need to pick up parts, get services, know how, as I work on various aspects of my car. I want to eventually do a body-off, so paint and body shops with ACVW experience would be great to know about.

I am looking forward to meet VW folks in the area also.

Thanks in advance for your input.

There is a small group of local aircooled drivers that can probably help out easily
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=332666&start=1720

VanCafe is a good local VW parts supplier
Winchester auto and Santa Cruz auto parts(they can mix paint too) on Soquel are good for general car parts.
Napa across the street from VC has a decent machine shop.

Too bad that Arlie's closed down many years ago. Is Otto's still there south of the Pacific Ave five-way intesection?

Oh, just checked google maps, it's a friggin' traffic circle now? Not nearly as entertaining as the old 5-way used to be!

Holy crap, street view tells me it's all gone... time flies...it's not 1975 anymore... almost respectable looking now!

Hello, As Syncrodoka said: there is a small group in Santa Cruz and a few
good bodyshops also.as far as building your 1776 parts will need to be
ordered online mostly.

I lived in Santa Cruz for almost 20 years and worked at the VW dealer
there for many years too. and like all other places things change with the
times. The town had many v.w.'s then and a few good shops including
as KTPhil said,Arlie's, Henning's Werkstatt, Old Volks Home. OVH is still
in business but, not the same since Tony sold it to a young pup that
really is having a hard go at it.

I still come over the hill in my bus to surf and see a few old friends and have great memories of a fun time in SC. see ya on the road Wink

For instance,in Santa Cruz purple is the color of choice for the hairy
legged women.....while in San Francisco there is the rainbow color Shocked

But, after seeing the backround color PURPLE in your avatar then you
can and will be considered a Local Dancing

If you don't mind a trip over the hill, there is Kirkwood VW in Campbell (roughly @ Winchester & 85) for repairs if you need it. If you like to roll your own, there is Bugformance (excellent!) in San Jose and Peninsula Automotive in Campbell just up the street and around the bend from Kirkwood.
