At the risk of sounding stupid...
What is this on my engine? I have seen it in a couple photos, but not all. I have 67' split window walkthrough. This is the first bus I have owned. I haven't had a Volkswagen for abut 12 years now. Before I had bugs - 63', 65', 67'. I hadn't seen this on any cars I have previously owned. To be clear I am curious about the piece underneathth carb that connects via tubing to the round piece and about the round iece itself, which seams like an overzealous T fitting.

Just a guess, it's an EGR valve. I could be wrong, but that's not what I'm writing for. Your fuel filter is in a bad place. Check the archives, you'll find a lot of things about it.

Yup, California retrofit EGR device from the mid-1970s, made by STP and others. Does the engine no good! Remove it and plug the drilled/tapped hole in the heat riser with a plug from the hardware store.

More info:

And remove that car-be-que inducing plastic fuel filter while you are at it.

Not seen one in years pretty sure it was called a Kar Kit Nox device. Used to come with a dash sticker. Think it was used on lots of Cal. cars in the mid 60's early 70's. Not just VW.

That's it. Wink

So that's what those damn holes in some heat riser tubes are for, heard of it but never actually saw one intact Cool

Thanks for all the quick responses, I'm pulling it today. Also removing the filter - thanks for the heads up. Has anyone ever plugged one of these themselves? Any idea what kind of plug from the hardware store works best?

Take the removed piece with you and match the threads on it to the plug. I do not think you will need a tapered pipe type plug nor do I think you will need a long one. In this case, the shorter the better.

You should also move that fuel filter to over the transaxle, and use braided German hose. Nobody needs the drama of leaking fuel over a hot engine.

Russ Wolfe said the new German braided hose develops pinhole leaks just like OG hose! He had a big roll of it that he wouldn't use anymore or sell. He advised using standard rubber fuel hose with the reinforcing thread in the rubber.

The ethenol blends here in the US will eat the braided hose in less than a year. I have used fuel hose from Ford that is rated for E85 and fuel hose from BMW without any issues lately.

That must be a bad batch, I have some that is less than 2 years old and it is fine. The outer cloth acts like a second reinforcement in case of leaks. These days, some of this hose might be made in China!

Russ and Tram both seem(ed) to advocate 7mm Mercedes Benz fuel line. That's what I have on my VW's now.

I love how threads like these go from "what the heck is this" to "what's the best kind of fuel hose" lol.
