PLEASE SCROLL DOWN TO THE BOTTOM OF THE PAGE FOR THE WRITE UP AND PHOTOS

Hello all, it's getting close to that time of the year again and I'd like to put up a post inviting all those coming to the event with Syncros to put your van on display at Vanfest.

Vanfest (http://www.vanfest.org/) is now a 3 day event taking place on Sept 9 - 11th at Malvern County Show Ground.

Here are a few shots taken at last years show.

We need as many Syncros for the display as possible and not just T3 Syncros but T4 Syncros and T5 4 Motions too. I have heard that we will have the new T5 Rockton Terock on display...

As well as the new VW Amarok.

VW will be there with some nice new vans and hopefully some important old ones too.

Please contact me at [email protected] if you want to include your Syncro in the display.

As well as the Syncro display, we are trying to organise an offroad trial/display in the main arena on the Saturday. The idea being to show off the capabilites of our Syncros/4 Motions. If you are interested, again please email me at [email protected]

The event runs from Friday to Sunday and we hope to have a good turn out of vehicles for all three days. You'll need to get your vehicle in position first thing each morning and then it's up to you how much you want to display it. Either lock it up and leave so people can have a look around or open it up, chat to everyone about it and make a bigger display of your vehicle and the information about it. Everyone loves a story whether it's the last time you were out greenlaning or what you've done to the van re restoration or modifications.

See you all there and fingers crossed we'll have as good weather this year as we did last year.

Michael Ghia

Just an update on this to say that the display/trial will be run as an RTV trial (Road Taxed Vehicle) so if you want to come along, make sure everything is in good condition as your vehicle will have to pass scruitineering.

Looking at the weather forecast, can I suggest that everyone with a Syncro puts their Mud terrains or All terrains on... it looks like we're in for a wet one. Sunday is going to be very muddy Laughing

Well I think that Vanfest was a hit again this year.

The Syncros turned up and put on a good display.

I turned up on Thursday with the Balance Bridge (or Seesaw) and some barrels, Simon (Holloway) managed to get 2 skips for friday morning and I managed to grab all sorts of stuff from around the showground to create tricky elements for the RTV Trial.

The guys from Borg 4X4 started arriving around 5pm on Friday and we put the finishing touches to the main obsticales and then set out the course with canes as to where you need to drive.

There were 10 gates which you had to pass through without touching the canes, somes were easier than others but the impetus was on driving skill rather than what your vehicle could or couldn't do.

This was a small mound of earth which gates set so that you had to turn exactly at the right point or you wouldn't make it through.

The skips... this was just about getting over. Drivers had the choice of putting their front wheels on or driving over. I think out of the 11 entrants, 4 took the plunge and went over Very Happy

This was brilliant. This van was at Syncro 25 and did a lot of the trial there with the demountable on the back then too! He didn't go over the skips due to the overhang at the back.

Over the Seesaw... this was close!

The Sleepers (blocks of wood) were set far enough apart so that if you didn't have enough momentum, you would stall and then struggle to get going again but if you went too fast, the whole van would jump up and down a lot!

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

The original idea with this was to use the Roller to drive up to and have your VC pull you over it. As it turned out, the roller wouldn't work upsidedown as there was no support in the centre for the middle of the 2 rollers. I used it was a ramp instead to drive up onto barrels and then back down using just the engine braking for a controlled descent and then reversing into a tight space.

The last bit of the course was 2 metal grids, positioned offset so that your wheels would go into the holes alternatively and rock the van. These led straight onto a pair of telegraph poles which you had to drive onto the top off and no fall off! The hard bit was as the rear wheels went over the grids. Lee managed it perfectly here.

The Saturday RTV Trial was setup so that I would take the entrant around in Limey, show them the course with instruction and then I would passenger them around the course trying to allow the entrant to do as much as possible without getting into trouble.

There was one small bit of damage done to the front of the Blue VR6 Syncro Galvanised van when Rob missed the Brake pedal and rolled too far forwards on the Seesaw and the front end hit the floor fairly hard. Thankfully, no major hard done and apparently the bumper was already cracked. His ego was a little bruised but he carried on and completed the round... well done Rob. A lot would have bowed out at this point and given up. He was the first one up and I take my hat off for taking your very nice Syncro around the course.

A HUGE thanks to all at Borg4x4 and Vanfest crew and Dave Spiller for helping to put the course together and we're looking at doing something bigger and better next year. This was the first time this has been done and with 2 weeks notice to get it together.. I think it went well. Simon asked us at about 3pm on Saturday if we could do it again on Sunday!! As the MSA permit was only for the Saturday and we didn't have any staff, I did demo runs in Limey on the Sunday instead.

S'funny, that roof rack made it through syncropendence, slab common and a few laning days with out moving. Drive over a couple of logs and it falls off Laughing
I reckon it was touchdown on the seesaw that done it, I grounded hard enough to crack a seam Shocked (who hit harder, me or rob)
Everything is in one piece though, would be boring if I just sat there and polished it

Congrats to all who worked and drove this event. Particularly Mike and Dave for setting it up.

Looks great fun and a chance to exercise your skills and get to know your van.

It's a Porsche 997 engine and gearbox.

Peter has had a 996 3.4 in previously which will be going into his son's Carat (which currently has a 2.5 Subaru).

Big thanks to MG and BORG for making the RTV happen at VF this year. This was my first attempt at any kind of auto-test and I can thoroughly recommend it. I think I may be hooked!

Request: I can't seem to find a pic of C 767 ARW on the course Saturday afternoon (Blue Caravelle with CB aerial in middle of roof) so if anyone finds one, a link would be much appreciated.

And it wasn't as wet as we'd all feared, so no syncro rescues for the splitty weedeaters this year Wink
