Got started stripping down my panel today. Going to get into the metal repair right off. Some normal rust repair, and some not so normal bullet holes courtesy of some idiots in its past prerescued life.
Scott Hall startded this project several years ago, and I acquired it from Eddie Lawson who bought it from Scott. Hopefully I can do it justice. My plans are to weld up the camper window holes and make it a true panel again. Once it's a driver again, I will be fitting a camper interior in it.
Right now it is sitting on 2.5 lifted spindles, and a cut and turned beam. Rear is a bug IRS tranny with bay window axle stubs, and '68 bay window axles and swing arms.
Some of the work ahead of me.
One window filler panel already fitted. Used a piece of long panel I saved out off the shorty bus I did for Scott Hall. It has the panel brace that matches what was cut out.
Got the front doors, front glass, rear glass, and headlights stripped off today.

KICK ASS! I like lifted buses. Keep us posted on progress. Did you replace the tail light or did they miss that thing all together

i wouldnt weld up the windows if you plan on putting camper interior back in it. youll like having something to look outta in the back and the light coming through the windows in the morning.

The tail light you see is a trucker marker light that was stuck in the hole. I've scrounged up some tail light buckets, and some rusty bezles so far. Still need to find some lenses, and seals.
As for the windows, I like the idea of dark. Even in the daytime, pull off the road, pull a couple curtains and it would dark enough to sleep midday. I'm also thinking of making a tent that would be universal to whatever side I need to set it up on. That way when I set up camp for a longer stay, I'd have ventalation and natural light. |

No bullet holes for me!
Took the rest of the doors and hatches off today. Next weekend I'm going to get the beam and tranny out and get it on my stand so I can flip it on its' side.

No on the stock gearing. It' going to have a 5:37 R/P with a quaif for better traction control. |

Got the beam out Saturday. a show in Phoenix and rain when I got home prevented any work on the rear.

this is the whole reason why the windows on my 58 panel are getting welded up. privacy, no light coming in...i'd much rather have that than waking up at the butt crack of dawn after a night of drinking in a the campsite.
i'm still very curious on the irs rear...how did you achieve the final drive ration on the transaxle? you do it yourself? where do you find ring and pinions to change it out? i looked and think the 002 trans?? has that final drive ratio?? just curious, i like the idea of going up just a smidge, but don't want the massive camber, or have to do a tranny drop, looks like 930 (i think) cv's with bus axles, and the bolt in kit that wagens sells and i could go up a bit more on the rear.
is this the setup you are running in the rear?? more info would be appreciated 
edit: also, wiht gearing that low, you could pretty much run stock displacement in your motor and still handle the tires correct??? i know it wouldn't be a speed demond but....

Well, I'll try and answer all your questions. 1st, I think you mean ratio? When I first read your comment, I flew right over it and thought you meant rotation.
I found a 5:37 ring and pinion through a friend off mine that was building a Baja for a relative. He then deceided to go with a bus tranny instead. I haven't installed it yet, haven't got that far.
As I was told a 5:37 is the biggest R/P you can get into a type1/2 tranny. I imagine you could find one at any compitant off road shop. But I don't have any info on manufacturers.
All the fab you see in the pictures was started by some one else. I will tweak it as needed. Like adding 930 CVs. Right now they are bus CVs and are at thier extreme angle. They will commpress some with engine weight and my camper interior, so I may wait until I see what the durabilaty is with stock bus CVs.
This bus had a 1" tranny drop.

Since I frittered away the winter months while it was cool, I decieded to get busy with some body work before it hits the 100s. Started with the most daunting task, all the bullet holes. Cut out the worst section of the left rear panel. Beat out all the dents, and hammered all the metal back in place around the bullet holes. Then welded it back in. Made for a long day.

What it looks like now. Still going to cut out and patch the bigger holes. But all the small holes welded up.

Been putting in some hours between my classes this fall. Got most of the rust cut out and welded up. Here are lots of pics.
Engine bay bullet holes repaired.
Battery tray welded in.
New door rockers both sides,
New inner rockers as well.
Pull my bulkhead back two inches and shortened the seat stops. I'm a big guy and need the extra room.
Finnished off corner of the bulkhead.
POR-15ed the under side, and inside the belly pans.
Started the floor repair, and fixed a crunched dog legs with new metal piece.
Inner right wheel well repair.
That's it for now. More tomarrow. |
