Finally got my vintage set-up 40hp motor in the car!
The engine was built using a 1965 D case 40hp engine block with cam bearings. The D case is the first case to have cam bearings. The crank is stock 40hp (I think NOS) with NOS stock main bearings and rebuilt rods. It has NOS 83mm big bore kit (NPR brand) and rebuilt 1965 square boss 373 casting 40hp heads, new valves, completely gone over and vintage 1960's aftermarket domed aluminum finned valve covers (very rare). The distributor is a blue screamer Bosch 019 distributor (rebuilt) and new German cap and rotor and German spark plug wires. It has a vintage Deitz aluminum duel carb intake from the early 1960's with 2 rebuilt Solex 28 PBIC-1 carbs with 12 volt chokes. The carbs have NOS motorcycle stacks on top of them. The engine has a modified 356 Porsche fan shroud to fit the 40hp VW engine with 356 Porsche carb linkage on the back of it and the restored Fram oil filter. The NOS linkage to the carbs is from a VW industrial engine. Generator is from a 1967 beetle and is 12 volt, The fuel pump and oil pump are NOS. New hoses with clamps, new original fan belt, all engine tins and shroud have been powder coated. Under the shroud is a 356 Porsche oil cooler for better colling. Mr. Wob's stainless steel "Abarth" exhaust.

Nice looking build. It would look even better with a small diameter 12V (porsche) generator. Do you have airfilters for it for when you want to really drive it? How does it perform? _________________ 1965 Beetle sedan

Im about to put a porsche generator stand and oil filler on it. I have not had the chance to run it yet but as soon as I get power back I will get it going (lost power from the hurricane) The velocity stacks have fine mesh grills in them. |

If you don't really want to spring for the whole 356 generator, you could probably get away with using the 356 generator pulley. The other benefit to that is that the 356 pulley is a smaller diameter which spins the fan a little faster. Takes slightly more power but aids cooling. |

Nice build!
But don't ruin the engine by running simple mesh 'airfilters'. Those screens are only used to keep the engine from inhaling rocks, squirrels, and small children, NOT for filtering sand, silt, and larger micron abrasive particles from the air.
Have you considered finding a pair of period filter housings that would allow you to run modern filter medium, be it K&N or similar? Maybe a pair of early Mann or Knecht filters from a 356, or modified oil bath filters from a 36 or 40 horse motor that have more performance-oriented filtering medium inside - with the airhorns/velocity stacks hidden inside.

Jake: Im trying like hell to get it done for bugout! Gonna be some late nights this week! I like the filter ideas, I have been debating getting the old school style elbows from an austrailian carb setup i've seen. Cant remember the name of them though. |

Weren't they just some ghia elbows? The Australian setup you may be thinking of were actually curved intakes using side draft carbs. These used a regular thin line air cleaner. |

Got the motor timed, and carbs sync'd. Ran nice for about 10 minutes then locked up. Tore it down today to find the head of #4 exhaust valve halfway through the piston. |

What was the problem? Deck height too close? Connecting rod come apart? Just wondering cause I'm building a very similar setup right now. _________________ 64' Pearl White beetle, type 113 sedan. Purchased in Hamburg Germany, driven for a year via vw tourist program, shipped to CA in 1965.

I wonder the same thing. How does a rebuilt engine with "new valves..." have a valve "head" break loose in the cylinder and imbed itself half way through the piston in 10 minutes of running??? |
