Whoever built the motor used all new stuff except the springs. The valve springs had some minor pitting in them and looked to have been used. I'm thinking the spring broke, rocker arm pushed the valve in and had no way to return itself to the seat. After a few times of smacking the piston the valve broke, and was then wedged between the head and the piston. |

Yep....the spring was the root of the failure....that sucks. Don't get time to come to the vintage forum too much but your thread caught my eye. Just not much call for vintage work in our area or I'd be doing more of it if I could.
Hope you can grab some new or NOS springs for that thing so you don't have a repeat performance. Sound like someone stuck a twig in the fan before it broke the head off? That was my experience with a broken spring before. Anyway...good luck and glad you found some new pistons.

Thanks for the pistons! Got it all back together and put about 70 miles on the car today!
Got the valve seat re ground replaced all the exhaust valves and springs. Replaced the cracked piston and rod also. Finally got to drive this pile today and it was great! Been a long time !!!!!!
