I recently tried to get birth certificate for my '73 Karmann Ghia. They responded very quickly (about 8 days) but said that the micro fiche records of my VIN were not readable so they could not provide my information. Very nice
letter that I put in my record folder.

The letter from VW with my Ghia's history is great. But I want more.
Ford not so long ago released the complete information about VIN's and cars to a third party company. Now, owners can purchase an authentic-looking window sticker, with exact prices, manufacture date, even stats about the particular model.
The window sticker looks exactly like the one that was on the car when it was new, right down to the colors and type fonts.
Do you think we could get VW to do this?
Here's a link to what Ford does for the Pinto and other old Fords:

I just received my certificate today for my 58 Ghia cab. I paid through their website and it was very easy. It took a little over 3 weeks to get it and it cost $48.90. |

Shucks... I was looking forward to getting it to look for correct dealership license plate frames too.
Dear Mr. Lai,
We are very sorry but we are not able to help you.
Our service is very special, because of our almost completed archive of documents but sometimes we are not able to find out anything about a few vehicles, because of the age of the documents, they are illegible or crumbling or both of them.
We hope for your understanding and will send you your money back.
Yours sincerely

I have posted my birth certificate experience to my 68 Ghia build thread, but I figured I would post it here as well as it was this thread that gave me the information to order mine .. figured I should share my experience here as well.
I ordered it January 26 2014 and received it June 16 2014. It cost 50 Euros, which at the time was $68.70 US.
I felt the cost was reasonable for the information that I received, and I didn't really mind the 5 month wait (although I did get worried at the 4 month mark and sent a brief -- and very respectful -- email just to make sure that it hadn't been sent and lost in the mail. They apparently are short staffed (one person working on birth certificates?) and are working through quite a back log. _________________ Chris

Mine arrived today, six months and one week after I ordered it. Cool thing is that the Ghia's birthday was 2 days ago, and it left the factory tomorrow, headed for Chicago, 43 years ago. Birth certificate arrived practically on its birthday. _________________ '71 Ghia cabriolet |

Just ordered mine (50 euros), I have an educated guess that my car was produced around September '68 so we'll see how far out I am. It says the current waiting list is around 16 weeks _________________ 1969 UK Karmann Ghia build http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=518789&highlight= |

Does anyone from South Africa, Australia or New Zealand have any experience with ordering these as we received Beetle and Kombis in kits for tax purposes in the 50's, 60's and 70's.
I can't see how Ghias would have worked like this as the bodies were built by hand and I can't see how they would have built them from kits. _________________ Rusty 61 RHD Karmann Ghia Coupe - Resto in progress....slowly

I have only heard of people who tried to order one being told the records were to fragile to read... I doubt they would be accurate for Aussie car. I'm interested for the ghia though as mine being from NZ I'm guessing they were all german imports? _________________ 1960 Beetle ''Heidi" daily driver
