No it was in the van. |
I was only able to get about 1/2 of my nuts to turn, and that was some of the easier ones to access. I'll have to do it by dropping the tank, dremeling bolts, etc.
Need to redo the straps, etc. anyways.

I am resigned to the fact I am going to have to do this very soon since both my tank straps are completely rusted through  Is there any list of the replacement parts before I spend 2 hours looking on ETKA?
I have to pull the engine anyway for a slight leak from my rear main, and so I figure I may as well go all the way and take care of the straps too.

Thought I would add my photos ...
With the tranny out I thought it might be a good time to sort out any other problems. The tank has leaked for ages and the straps look very rusted. So I decided to drop the tank. What a sh..t job. Diesel, coolant and 25yr old dirt and mud in ya face! Do people normally remove the sender gauge first? Mine got hooked up on the chassis rail stopping the tank from dropping down. After lots of bad words a large pry bar and jack I got it out. Anyway, its out...
As you can see i have had a leak for a while from the filler hose.
The metal part where you fill the tank has been badly welded in the past and was leaking.
The sender works but along with the tank straps is very corroded. Plus I think the sender should have a pickup tube on the end of it?
So it looks like a load of new parts? Being based in New Zealand i need to look all over the world with deep pockets I should get another 25yrs out of it! Not complaining at the part costs, just happy people still make em, its just postage costs...
-filler neck (stainless) Brickwerks UK
-filler neck rubber hose (only found on van cafe web site) expensive for a rubber hose?
-sender unit kit. Van Cafe and Go Westy
-tanks straps (stainless) Many suppliers
-tanks re-seal kit Van cafe Go Westy.
So do i put the sender in first or refit the tank then install the sender unit? |

I put in the sender then cut a big plastic soap detergent bottle and taped it to the DS frame member tightly with duct tape. That helped everything slide by the frame easier without digging into it too badly but a pair of pry bars were still used to persuade the tank into place- be very careful about the sender nipple.

I am removing the AC from my rig (along with everything else) and wondering if the filter looking thing parallel to the fuel filter is. Looks like pressurized hose and is about the size of a can of soup. Bolts to the Frame with two bolts...
Some sort of AC filter or expansion tank?

Anyone know the measurement between the tank strap mounts on the firewall? I cut my bracket out and am fabricating a new one. Lining everything up...the SS straps do not seem to be lining up well with the shape of the bottom of the tank.
Big question: Do the straps stay square with the car (equal distance between hangers and firewall mounts)

I can get a measurement when I get back home.
I will say that I just finished installing my SS straps around my refurbed fuel tank in my on going syncro conversion.
I neglected the formed support, and made ~1.25" wide L-brakets out of angle steel that bolt through the bulkhead into the underseat compartment; I welded captive nuts onto the L-brackets and secured the SS straps to that.
Point being (for this discussion) - My L-brackets do NOT leave the strap mounting point in exactly the same location that the stock syncro had them. The straps are relatively close to being 'square' with the vehicle, but not perfect.
I have found that there is a lot of leeway with the fiting of the syncro fuel tank. Mine is SOLIDLY in there.
(btw - others have mounted their tanks this way in past 2wd-syncro conversions - most notably Syncroghia and Frankensubysyncro, 2 people that know vangons and USE them to the fullest)
I also found that I had to 'form' the SS straps to the tank a bit to get them to follow the tank shape. Makes sense realy as they are pretty much flat as you recieve them.
And man, that tank is NOT fun to work with. One of the more unpleasant tasks I have completed with the syncro conversion (and that's saying something)

Does anyone have a rubber seal for the fuel tank sender to hand? How thick is the rubber and what is the outside diameter of the seals?

Ok, I'm doing the same job smurf rocked out... I have a question regarding the set up of the fuel line rack. When I look at the Bentley, the T for the vent lines looks to be on the passenger side sending the non float valve, open line towards the fuel filler... In my set up I pulled, the T is on the passenger side with the open line going towards the charcoal canister, which sounds right to me?

Any help is greatly appreciated as I'm hoping to make Syncrofest!

I feel like a broken record but......with all the dang farm bills pushing us into bio based fuels make sure your new lines are up to the task...and I mean dig. You may find your self talking to a German girl who really knows her fuel line tell you that yup that's fuel line but it won't support oxygenated or bio base. I made this $$ mistake and glad that i did. After all our vans do burn down too!

Can the steel filler pipe be removed and replaced with the motor and syncro tank left in place? How is The pipe (#13 in picture) attached to the tank? Is it just a slip fitting into a rubber grommet?
I have a new sending unit that is leaking. It was installed when the motor was built. Anyone run into this before? Do the gaskets fail?

The sending unit can be serviced with the tank in place. Remove the charcoal canister and remove the bolts for the fuel filter and pull it out of the way.
I have never dealt with the filler pipe without removing everything so I cannot help there.
Aviation form-a-gasket from your local auto parts place is resistant to gasoline. It has worked well to fix a minor fuel smell that I had on my truck, I used it on the outer sender seal without issue. |

A Syncro that I built, but had a resealed tank and new sender in it before coming to my shop is now leaking when the temps drop below 30 degrees.
I do not know if an old gasket or any sealant was used during the install, but have not heard back from the owner since having it looked at locally.
Up until this point I have not had a weep from any sender, no matter how crusty or brand new. |

Yes, 13 is a slip fit at the tank.
It can be removed without much being removed along with it. |
