Got a 1986 2.1 liter 2 wd Vanagon. when at idle, whe has started to hunt, the hunting of rpms is intermittant, sometimes she wont do it, but about half the time she hunts +/-100 rpm to maybe a maximum of +/- 200 rpm at idle.
I know the throttle switch is closing (i have the Vanagon ecu tester box conected, the light on it shows the throttle switch closed). The engine has some fairly recent new vacuum hoses and intake seals /boots.
Any one got some ideas on where to look for a fix?
thanks! |

You are on the right track with going over all the new vacuum lines and connections. Also take a look at the idle control valve and it's hoses. See if you can isolate a common denominator at the times it happens. Is it only when the car is first started, Only while you are turning the steering wheel (if you have power steering) etc. Is this a new problem that has developed recently? Is the van new to you? You could try the WD40 spray trick, but it makes a mess.
Good Luck,

Take a good look at all air hoses. It could be un-metered air. You could try passing a turned on, unlit propane torch around the area of the air hoses. If the engine speeds up that is probley your problem. Just be carful not to cause an explosion!!! |

I'll be interested in what you finally find that cures it.
You might try this -- next time it is hunting undo the oil filler tube cap and see if the hunting ceases (works on mine). If it stops the hunting then it may be telling you something -- but I don't know what. |

If you don't have propane handy to help find the leak, use something like intake cleaner, starting fluid etc. that stuff is super flammable and will give you a change in idle for sure. Absolutely put a little red tube on the spray nozzle first and keep your extinguisher handy.
Could also have air leak where the "butterfly" shaft goes through the throttle body. _________________ 1987 GL Sunroof

Some may not like this comment but Vanagons seem to be describable in many different ways: hunting, bucking, and many more titles in past threads. I just wondered if this one had a license _________________ '09 2.5L Jetta 5 cylinder, 5 spd, super turbo, see thread in H2O Cooled Jetta, etc...
