Rubber chicken I know what you meant. What you get with the kit is a brand new harness for the engine, ecu, fuel pump and starter. The custom all new harness alone is 600-700 of the price. You get an cnc adapter plate, new flywheel,a serious engine cradle that just the engineering alone on just this one part is incredible. A machined intake adapter and thermostat housing that are not only functional but add some bling to the engine compartment.
I am just touching on some of the major componets but it's really a well designed kit. Did you get a chance to see my Westy with the Zetec turbo at transporter Fest? If I get back up your way you are more than welcome to take it out for a spin. She gets a little squirrely at 100mph though Shocked

i got a chance to take a small peek and your motor conversion, i agree it looks a very good install, i'd like to see more, but there is not time as we are leaving soon on our road trip, pictures wouldn't hurt Wink

for more than normal you definately need a poly bush kit on the front end, change everything i changed everything

and new lowered spring and shocks, it was totally different ride after that Very Happy

I have a complete set from Chris at T3 waiting for install along with a replacement power rack, all new tie rods, balljoints, end links, brake kit, bearings, etc. I took my time and made sure I bought what I think are the best quality parts available. I still need to source a grease for the urethane bushings and braided brake hoses.
One of the first things I usually do with any type of conversion I do (I have done a couple subie,a tiico,1.8 rabbit GTI) is upgrade the brakes. I didnt with my Zetec Westy though it does have powerslot rotors. I have pushed their limits a few times now that I have the Beta Turbo. After football practice I am taking my son to a Halloween party at a campground. It's a nice ride past Foxwoods casino and then down some back roads. Will it be a spirited boosting out if the corners or a nice leisurely fall cruise Think

IMHO, the most impressive design I have seen from ANY conversion fabricator is the Bostig engine carrier / skid plate combinaton.
Kudos Gents......you really have a leg up on all others attempting the same.
The hours of CAD work really helps deliver a strong product with very clean lines.

I think the new motors have dried up. I tried as have other to find them.
Long blocks are out there but when you add up the price of all the bits a pieces you'd have to buy from Ford it doesn't pencil out.
Going to get my used motor in about an hour.
$425 - 49k. Not too bad.

My most recent zetec was free. 30k miles.
The zetec I bought before that. 1,600 miles delivered for $400.

When assembled the engine carrier looks like an x-wing fighter. I have the skid plate even with my two wheel drive to protect the wife from stuffing the crank pulley into a curb. It can be a fight on who gets to drive the Westy sometimes!
The crate motors have dried up but I heard that Ford is planning another run sometime soon. The demand apparently is there to support it.
I'd like to make sure the offer is out there but if your in the Mystic,CT Area and want to drive my Westy just drop me an email. No lugers though she loves RPMs!
And yes pictures I have lots on memory card. Probley be easier to just take some new ones later today or tomorrow. Tim sent me a utube clip someone took but it doesnt show the engine. Pictures of anything specific?

Nice Picture, Insyncro. I have an earlier group Bostig install with the tubular engine mount and some questions. With your newer engine mount set up can you drain the trans oil? Also I noticed the plate on the drivers side, did you fabricate that? Are you using part of the original splash shields above the muffler? Do you have any additional pictures of your set up?
I purchased the mid cradle addition, but have not installed due to possible blockage of the trans drain plug.

Had planned on using a Marina quality waterproof grease unless anyone else has suggestions. Already dropped the van 45mm, with new Bilsteins. Loogy will be receiving an order shortly for the bushings to do front end once I decide what to do with sway bar. Already installed the braided lines. I do not have power steering (BillM knows this), but have contemplated a parts van to possibly do the conversion (along with other things).

After that, unless something major happens this winter, come spring I will make the drop on the Bostig kit and get on the list. Gives me all winter (and then some) to source a good motor. Lucky enough that my Boston Bob motor is still chugging along (thanks for the insight BillM)

As I see it: a good well designed kit, good support, been told they are good people and most of all - they are in my back yard.

You can still drain the tranny you just need the proper tool. I welded the. End cut off an Allen wrench to a ratchet wrench. You can do the same with a nut locked against a short bolt.
The plate on the drivers side covers the intercooler for the turbo upgrade. None of the vw oem shield are retained on the turbo version. I didn't use them on my NA version either. That's not saying they couldnt be used though. The only thing I would do different is trim my "firewall" next time just to neaten things up a bit more. I'd never put a stock motor back in. Shame on you

I took the photo directly from the Bostig site.
I do not have a Bostig conversion as of yet, but have a few motors waiting.

When the entire skid system, turbo charger and a few other upgrades in the works are out of testing and made production, I will convert one of my Syncros over.

I loaded this picture and made the comment about how clean it is....as I am working on a similar skid system for Subaru converted vans.

Jim, if you are reading this....I may be looking to do an internship at Bostig and have you Guys help me with the CAD, after hours of course Wink

Dylan I think the tranny skid plate is in final design. I have the rear skid plate and it bolts up so nice to the engine cradle. It's nice the way they have designed it all so their is no lips on any of the skid plates go get caught while sliding over something. Granted my Westy is only two wheel drive but with an LSD I can get where I need to go. I am going to lift my van during its suspension rehab this winter. I need the clearance for driving dirt roads. The main reason for my rear skid Plate is to protect the crank pulley from being stuffed into a curb or rock. I feel that between the engine carrier the skid plate and my burley trailer hitch it stiffens and strengthens the vans rear.

Ended up passing on that motor because it looked horrible. Broken/missing throttle body, water in spark plug galley, etc.
Drove down the road and pulled a much cleaner albeit higher mileage out of a just wrecked Focus. The guys even let me help which is pretty fun if you don't have to do it for a living.

Full motor with every nut, bolt and bracket, PS pump, etc. Could have taken then harness and ECU and airbox had I needed it.

The entire process of dealing with yards is troublesome and odd if you aren't seasoned in it. But I guess that's a part of any conversion. If you can swing it, I would recommend getting a motor out of a car vs buying a pulled one off of a shelf. Less inspection required and you know it hasnt' been scavenged of parts.

I have a deal with my local yards....
Don't do anything until I get there.
I gave them a list of the years makes and models of what I am looking for and my budget for exactly that and nothing less.
Together we have moved some engines Exclamation

Yup.
I want the entire skid system and production turbo kit too.
Soon, I'm sure.
I've waited this long.

Might I ask a naive question? What has stopped the zetec crowd from putting one of the many aftermarket zetec specific turbo kits on their vans? We have the room to pipe any which way. Is it the electronics?

The aftermarket kits are designed and tuned for a Zetec in a Focus. The Vanagon is not a Focus Smile

Here's what happened when they tried just that with an aftermarket superchager kit:

It is tempting, but I think if it were that easy then that's what Bostig would have done vs letting us wait and pouring engineering effort into what they are developing. As linked to, their first try didn't work out too well and they learned not to let stuff out until maturity.

Bill
Some additional questions. Do you have to remove the skid plate to drain the engine oil? Second, what do you think if I cut a curve out between the two holes in the cradle mount for trans drain access. Do you think that would hurt the integrity of the mount. It looks pretty strong to me.
