Today I did some testing of the single wire temp sender used in watercooled from 82-91 (except 2.1 waterboxer 2wd) using boiling water.
4 senders were tested, 2 original VW ones and 2 different aftermarket.
Results were similar, measured ohms at fast boil with only the threaded tip of the sender dunked in the water for a couple minutes each until the ohm reading stopped dropping. The numbers jumped around a few ohms up or down so these are what I settled on as mid points. The senders were at the surface with bubbling around them but not quite touching the nut flats. I measured the water temp 2 ways, using a thermometer and a VDO aftermarket gauge/sender combo, both read just above 210 F as expected. Will report more results after more testing.

Are you saying that the middle of the LED = 210*F? |

My question too. My experience is that the middle of the LED is somewhat in the 185ish range but the gauges vary a bit (lot). _________________ Dave O

I think I said I was going to test that soon. This is a work in progress. The Bentley test for the stock thermostat says it starts opening at 185-F and finishes opening at 221-F, page 19.8 bottom right.

You are testing the sender all VWs of the era used except the 2.1 wbx, is that what you are doing?
(I recognize that aluminum coolant flange from the head of an I4.)
If so, why?
I recall the senders are the same based on part number, if I recall.
(I have a bag full of them and some ARE different, you have to look real real close to see or just measure. My collection spans a few decades worth of collecting though.) _________________ "Use the SEARCH, Luke" But first visit the Vanagon FAQ!

I did something similar, though not as thorough, not long ago:
https://picasaweb.google.com/tubaneil/ECTTesting#5389230466131592754
Though I was measuring the sensor that supplies resistance to ECU, (AKA temp 2 for WBX?), IIRC, my used OEM "Luxembourg" showed resistances closest to what the A3 Bentley specifies. I imagine this is the OEM part. The made in China FLAPS offering was 2nd place. (can't recall brand of 3rd sensor)

These are the gauge senders used in all Syncros, all 1.9 wbx, and all diesel Vanagons. At least this is true for USA/CA models. Yes, some other VW and Audi products used the same one. This is also the same one used in many engine conversions such as Zetec and Subaru.

I did a similar but not quite to scientific test on my oil temp sensor setup.
I removed the temp sensor from the block, earthed it and then poored boiling water from a kettle over it while watching the gauge.
The first test showed around 65oC!!! I'd been wondering why the engine ran so cold!
A new temp sensor later and it showed 95-98oC. Much better.
