|
|
I am about to irradicate some rust issues on my bus. This will be my first time, so I was wondering if I should try to butt weld the new panel, or as a novice should I lap weld the new panel on and grind it down? Any other pointers would be appreciated. Thanks! _________________ KK4NTP

conventional wisdom is that butt weld is preferred because the lap weld may collect moisture and rust back out sooner. _________________ If you haven't bled on them, you haven't worked on them.

I'm no authority, just gathering the courage to do it myself. I woud think the better the patch panel fits the hole, the easier it is going to be to weld and thus clean up afterward. Remember to stitch weld so as to keep the heat/warpage down. I am going to practice a bit on non essential stuff before I weld on my Bus. Check out the Body panels thread. there is some good info there. _________________ If you haven't bled on them, you haven't worked on them.

If you take your time measuring fitting multiple times before you cut, it'll be a whole lot easier. Look through some build threads to get the idea. Buy the proper stuff to do it. Spend the money now do it right and only have to do it once. _________________ 1960 Bus Panel/Camper |

I've got a mig setup, and an angle grinder. Anything else I might need? _________________ KK4NTP

you also want some ESAB (or equivalent) ez grind welding wire. you will thank me later. butt weld is way better. don't rush. take time to fit, test, fit, re fit as needed. i hate to tell you, but i have almost 40 hours alone in rockers on my 71. some of that was waiting for the POR 15/paint etc to dry, but i feel the repair is invisable. also, MEASURE YOUR OLD PANELS before you cut, and take into accout the thickness of the blade/cutting wheel you use. fo you get stuck, PM me, i love rust _________________
