Cost was a huge factor in making these work. My kit was borrowed from a German T3 tuner. The bolt pattern changed from 5x112 to 5x130.
The hubs slide right on using Vanagon bearings. The grease caps had to be shortened to fit behind the wheels.

M14 x 1.5 x 60mm studs. Good to see that the design is being used Smile

I thought that I remembered seeing a topic on here reguarding installing Porsche Big Red Brakes onto the Front of a Vanagon. I was recently speaking with Burley From http://burleysmotorsports.com/ and he mentioned that he recently had a customer who did this and he also was looking for that info so that maybe he could offer a product to many of us Vanaon owners.
My Van is a late 80's 2WD Vanagon. Anyone done this or have any info or a Samba Topic covering this type install?

The customer Burley refers to is me and I've been running the Big Reds for almost a year with fantastic results. I'm on vacation right now and don't have the time to write a fully fleshed out post, but if you have any questions feel free to PM me. If you look through the stickies there is a link to a thread that gives a few more details on what I went through to make a kit that works on the 2wd and allows a relatively broad selection of wheels, retaining the stock bolt pattern. The brakes clear many (but not all) 16" 5x112 wheels.

Eric, beautiful parts. Not sure what I am looking at though. It looks like the hub top right, is that a rotor spacer top left? Are you saying you had to change the lug pattern? Is that a custom bearing hub or off the shelf from another application. What is the caliper "piston area" compared to a stock wbx caliper with the Porsche calipers? Are you using the stock vanagon master cylinder or changing it out?

I have thought about using a radial mount caliper for ease of adaption, but it looks like the parts pictured could quickly add up in cost. Thank you for posting. mark

Top left is a wheel spacer? That makes more sense.

I could spend hours looking at the Wilwood catalog.
Mounting the rotor to a cut down stock disk, brilliant!

I guess Eric will be back but the top pieces look like the custom hubs, then lower right is a hat/spacer, and the you see the hat/rotor combo.

Looks like a "call for pricing" situation. My guess is about $3000/axle.

Not really but thank you. The race car has Speedway Engineering hubs both front and rear. I was replacing the rotors when I noticed something in the design. Rather than "hats", Speedway uses and aluminum plate that bolts to the back side of their hub to adapt a disc. I had the old brake rotors from the vanagon sitting under my bench. I started laying parts on top of each other and noticed it might work. So I can't take credit, but thought it was worth pointing out here. Here is a picture of the Speedway Engineering setup. mark

The spindle hub in the background (2) so you can see front and back.
The hat allows you to bolt the 993TT caliper to the rear of the hub.
The hub could be adjusted for any bolt pattern and offset. I chose to go stock Porsche 52mm. Factory studs press in from the rear, and there's a machined lip for the grease cap.

Not hijack but the lexus ls400 have half the same bolt patern for the vanagon. I did have to make an adapter for off setting the caliper out to match the rotor but the top bolt goes thru to the caliper.
Unlike the porsche calipers these are under 35.00 at the wreckng yard and they are alum.

Do you have a range of years? Also, do you have a picture of the disc fitted over the hub? I am assuming when you say same bolt pattern as the vanagon you mean the lug pattern? About how thick was the space and caliper adapter bracket? Is it just the torque that keeps the caliper from rotating on the upper bolt? Thank you

its 96 and up if i rember right. The bracket is bossed and drilled for the toyota caliper bolt. about .675 thick. The bolt patteren refers to the caliper spacing. fitment on hub is same as g60 setup but the hub dia is larger. rotor is .12 thicker than g60 and at least .75 larger in dia.

I'm running the same Big Red setup that DingchowPing made. Uses audi rotors and adapters that he had made. If you do a search for his threads he has one or two that cover the project. Pretty easy setup really.

Good information. So is the lug pattern the same on the rotor from the Lexus or does it need to be redrilled to fit the Vanagon hub? The spacers are pretty nice. Thank you.
