That frame looks really sharp. great work!
So what are your plans with the crusty butt cheek? If there is a compound curve in that bit it looks pretty slight and manageable. _________________ Vehicle: 1975 Special order delivery walkthrough panel based pop-top camper (LCA / Sunliner). I'm going to have to buy a panel like this: http://www.wolfsburgwest.com/cart/DetailsList.cfm?ID=211813356BX
We have a big local VW show next weekend, so I'm going to see what I can pick up there for parts. I'm pretty excited about the progress, but man is it ever slow. I spent a few hours on the rear hatch (upper) and it hardly looks like I did anything! Once you get some paint on it though the hard work looks good. _________________ 1977 Transporter 2.0L Automatic Project

Thanks.
Here is a picture where you can see what I did, because I didn't cover it very well. Will have to touch it up a bit more. I had some rot on the curved rear section, so I cut a slit to get a piece of metal in. You can see the spot here:

Thanks. Just remember pictures always look better. Not that it looks bad in person But I am an amateur. I found a picture before I welded and still don't know what happened with the welded picture I really wanted to show, but this gives a better idea of how it worked. I just didn't think I could do a transplant and get the window opening right, so this was the way to go.

Pictures have a way of doing that, but you've got a large project and jumped right in. Anything you do is better than what you had. So for that, good work! _________________ MAKE FORUMS GREAT AGAIN

I'm very interested to see how that rear piece goes together. I have a large dent in that area and Im trying to decide which route to go.
Good Luck! |

Sounds like we'll be in a competition for parts next weekend _________________ "In any racing engine, the nearer you are to it disintegrating, the better it's performance will be"

Ha yeah well let's just say I'm slowly improving. I did do some welding on my brother in laws trailer yesterday and thought it came out pretty good. Still a way to go, but progress is good.
On that back lower panel: was thinking maybe I'll try to video the job and contribute something back to the forum. We'll see but maybe.
Mr unpopular. You'll have the edge on parts b/c I won't get there until about 10 or 11. I'll have my 5 yo son so hopefully he'll be cooperating with dad that day! _________________ 1977 Transporter 2.0L Automatic Project

mr northwest rider ;IMHO it is always better to straighten out a dent .The effort and expense of welding is not justified. get a hammer and dolly set from harbor freight and start slammin on what u got .It is great therapy..."take that u nasty dent"..... _________________ 63 two fold rag

I know I've been vacant for a while, so let me add an update! I am making progress and PROMISE to get some pics soon. I think maybe I'll do a video, probably be easier!
First off I am extremely excited to say that I found an almost perfect spray can match for ocean blue (L57)! I had been looking for something close since I bought the bus and the other day I'm walking through Home Depot and there it is. Rustoleum Lagoon in satin. You won't even believe how close to original this stuff is. I could never find a white that I liked, so I'm going with a slight off/yellow white. Same paint in ivory silk satin. Will I rattle can the whole bus? Not sure, but I have to cover it with something while I'm going through it so for now this is working for me.
Engine and gas tank are out and the tank doesn't look too bad either. Will clean it out and probably por-15 it, not sure yet because it really looks good.
Ceiling has been stripped, primed and painted (thank god!). That upside down work is just no fun at all.
Things to still do:(as far as body go)
1. Both front doors (one is stripped and in the middle of repair).
2. Right rear and battery tray.
3. Front nose and window.
4. Strip and paint engine compartment.
5. Strip and paint underside.
6. Final sand and paint.
I started writing this yesterday and was interrupted, so I just finished now! I plan to put a video together and get it posted today or tomorrow. _________________ 1977 Transporter 2.0L Automatic Project

I meant to say that my OG paint is L57 (reef blue or ocean blue). You can see in the video how closely the lagoon matches. I love that color! I think I found a better white I like too. _________________ 1977 Transporter 2.0L Automatic Project

The video is GREAT !!! the only problem is that i was the only one who saw what you started with...you'r doin good , slow but shure wins the race...# 1 cleaning engine compartment ; spray easy off oven cleaner. Not the new stuff, the old smelly stuff.Let it sit for an hour and wash off with hose,If any rust spots ,wire brush and treat like exterior sheet metal. #2 yes there were holes on both sides of the bottom of the engine hatch;never heard what they were for . how original do you wan't it ? SEE #6... #3 for the nut that holds the bumper you can weld one to a peice of metal that sits on top of the frame where a longer bolt can catch it...#4 MY headliner was in the bus when i got it ...no help there...#5 bend a long thin peice of metal and stick it up in the front door and weld it in like you did on the side windows...#6 if you are going to cut the right rear corner out of a parts bus why not just get the corner and all the way across the back fixing both sides and the peice across TOO ?? randy in valrico will let you cut off all that you need _________________ 63 two fold rag

The hole in the rear corner panel is there to allow access to the inside of the rear chassis rail, for rust proofing, inspection or drying any water that gets in there. I would check the area where the rear engine mount bar fits onto the chassis as any corrosion there must be sorted out too. We made the rear chassis leg from 3x2 box section last time I did one about the same as yours. _________________ 71 West coast Kombi
