Anyone out there know what the trumpets or "rampipes" mounted (on throat opening) in the aircleaner housing do (Weber 40's in this example)?

Just passing curiosity.

I did a samba/google search and came up with something about airflow but wanted to see if anyone had a more indepth explanation.

really interesting read! Thanks for the link.

An additional question: From my understanding, the stand off from the top of the carb throat and the top of the air cleaner should be 4 inches. Is this right? So adding a stack to the throat would reduce the stand off... not good right?

oops... found my answer searching for "velocity stack" instead. Taller filters.

Answer the previous or add to the above if you'd like. Found my answer.

They are commonly known as air horns or velocity stacks. They increase the air flow into an engine substantially and can be tuned to make the air intake resonate which helps pack air into the cylinders. We used to get about 350 - 400 RPM more out of an engine using them on the race car.
