Hi Im Jeff Power, a bus fanatic, and woodworker. I've been reproducing Split bus camper cabinets for a while, and I was contacted recently by Rick to tackle this huge project.
Rick asked us to outfit his 1971 Swiss Postal Highroof with a complete set of custom cabinets and wood interior panels. His primary goal was to have something different, but that could still pass for factory Westfalia.
The customer dropped off some OG Westy cabs to restore, but in the end we just rebuilt everything.
The Sink/Stove will have an electric truck fridge installed, and the wall cabinet above the sink cabinet was designed to house a Microwave, as well as additional storage. We also built a little cabinet to go above the driver and passengers heads. It got cover with headliner paneling.
All of the Cabinets are covered with Formica, and all of the wood paneling was finished to match, when you are in the bus the match is so close its impossible to tell the difference between the two.
It was a very interesting project to say the least, there were a lot of hurdles to overcome, but in the end it turned out great and Rick was really happy with the finished project.
Here's the pics -

Very nice. So spacious, and you did a great job of honoring the original Westy interior. _________________ *****************

No at some point in this buses life someone else had cut them away, my customer really liked the idea of using that space as storage. _________________ I build complete Westy Style camping interiors check them out here > www.rjcampers.com

do you have photos of other buses you have done? |
Heres some more pics of a couple other projects. These are just completed pics.
The first is a set of cabinets that was the recipient of a strip and re-veneer job. The customer dropped off the cabinets and we stripped the formica off, pulled all the rubber trim, and re-veneered all the faces of the cabinets. Then we re-streched and re-installed all the rubber trim.
Next is a 69 westy I bought to put together and sell, This one needed some mica patching and all the rubber stretched and cleaned. I also put all new interior and ceiling panels in this bus.
Heres my 67 that we built a complete custom interior for, loosely based off the SO-23 SO-33 kits
And here is a picture of our latest efforts SO-33 Copy Kits. This bus is a customers.

Hi Jeff,
Those interiors look great. Would you mind sharing a bit of information on the finish you used on the 67? I love the look. |

Very nice work Jeff! Impressive to say the least.
I will be doing the same to mine soon, and was wondering if you used all Baltic birch? _________________ "Two things are infinite: The universe and human stupidity; and I'm not sure about the universe." Albert Einstein

For the Highroof we used all Maple plywood. Rick, the customer, picked out a Maple grain Formica laminate, so we matched that for the paneling. _________________ I build complete Westy Style camping interiors check them out here > www.rjcampers.com

First off, I want to thank Jeff & his dad for doing such an amazing job on our interior. It’s exactly what we wanted. We had a hard time finding someone to tackle the interior at first – one company gave us their concept and a price, then wouldn’t return our calls, then we couldn’t find a company that had done anything like this van before (it’s not like they’re all over the place, though)…when we found Jeff we knew it was a perfect match! He understood just what we had in mind, and his attention to detail made it even better.
It’s been a long journey. In 2005, my friend Fred told me about his buddy who owns a wrecker service/yard and a van that was getting ready to go to scrap. When I saw it I knew I had to save it from the crusher! When the wrecker pulled into our driveway my wife thought I had lost my mind, she had no clue what this thing was. Even our dogs were confused. I tried to explain the thing was just so weird…and then after much research I realized this was a Swiss postal van, and a RHD with a roof rack on top of that. Not your everyday find. My motto is when you hear about weird stuff always go look at it.
We drove it for a few years as-is (we aren’t proud ) and then decided the metal along the bottom of the body looked pretty scary, so into the body shop it went. 2 ½ years later (yeah, don’t ask) it came out – metal pretty much all cut out along the bottom and replaced, as well as a new coat of paint. Then we started the search for the right interior guys. So we’re back to Jeff and his great job – enjoy the pics! (Just a note - this thing is hard to photograph, the pics don't reflect the true Postal yellow.)
